HAT-FASTENER.
Specication of Letters Patent'. ,v
Patented July 2, 1 907'.'
Applicatibnilsd December 8,1906. Serial No. 345,908.
To all 'whom z'tmay concern:
313e itlnown that I, HARRY H. MITZER, a citizen of thel United States of America, residing at Philadelphia,
Y in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvide fastening devices which form permanent i'ixtures `'ofylthe hat and obviate the use of the ordinary hat pins and the objections incident thereto, the construction being such as to secure the hat firmly in position upon the head withoutrmutilating the hat, causing in- I jury to the scalp or deranging the hair. i In the accompanying drawing,-Figure l is a bot- 'tom plan view of a hat showing the application of the fastening devices thereto.. Fig. 2 is a similar view of one of the fastening devices on an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 isa section on the line 3-3 of Fig. l. l
' Referring to the drawings, l indicates a hat, and 2 its brim, upon the underside of which is anangedla pair of the fastening devices 3, arranged at diametrically opposite sides of the brim,. as shown. These fasteningdevices are alike in constructionyand each consists of a l metallic bracket plate or stripfl curved longitudimillyt to conform tothe contour ofJ the brim at its point ofv junction with the body of the hat and -provided at its' ends with openings 5 for the pasageof suitable fastenings to secure the same to the brim.
Adjustably secured to the bra-.c plate'isa comb, composed of metal, Celluloid.` shell, or any .Other suitable material. Theermediate teeth or" this comb are of ordinary construction except that the 'space between the two center teeth communicates at its outer end with a slot 7 formed in the base or back plate 8y of the comb, which space and slot constitute an extended guide passage to permit the comb to have a maximum range of adjustment on a screw 9 extending downwardly from the center of the plate 4, which screw carries awing nut l() to bear upon the plate ,8 and central teeth and clamp the comb in any position` of adjustment to the bracket plate. The end teeth ll of the comb are also transversely enlarged or widened and provided with longitudinal slots l2 extending into the plate 8 and closed at both ends, said slots forming guides receiving headed pins or studs 13 carried by the bracket plate, whereby the comb is guided for movement in avtrue path and issecurely retained in applied position. A linger piece 14 is formed upon the inwardly and that the said combs are adjustable horizontally on the brim toward and from the head o f the wearer. Hence when the nuts l0 are 'relaxed `the 'combs may be forced inwardly until the teeth thereof enter ,the hair at the sides of the head and then fastened from outward movement by tightening the nuts;
whereby the hat will be held rmly'in position upon the head, the guiding connections between thebra'fcket plates and combs enabling the latter to be adjusted with facility and preventing independent movement v of the same upon the hat. i
I t will be apparent the described construction and arrangement of the fastenings enables them to be adjusted to securely engage the hair Without comingin contact with the scalp, and further obviates the necessity of constantly piercing the hat, Vas is necessaryl with the ordinary hat pins.' It is also apparent that as -these v fastenings form permanent fixtures of the hat they can-- not become displacedor be easily lost. y 'l llaving thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, isz- -1. ,I n a hat fastenery` a bracket e, guide slotbetween plate, 'a .comb having the center teeth thereof extending Ynto its back plate and having its end teeth formed with '.ongitudlnal slots, guide studs on the bracket plate passing through said slots inthe end teeth; whereby the comb is sldably connected with the plate, a 'stem extending lthrough 'the slot betweenv the center teeth, and means associated withsaid stem for ,adjustably securing -the comb Ato the bracket plate.
2. In a hat fastener, a bracket plate provided on opposite sides of its longitudinal center lwith headed studs,
a comb haring a guide slot oet-Ween the center teeth thereof ext-ending into its back-plate and having ltsend `teeth formed with longitudinal slots closed at their opposlte ends and also extending into the back plate, lsmid slots in the end teeth receivng'said guide studs, whereby the comb is slida'bly mounted o n the bracket plate.4 a screw -stem extending through the bracket plate and central guide slot in the comb, and a nut engaging said stem to clamp the comb in adjusted\positon.
3. ln a hat fastener, the combination with-a hat, of
bracket plates secured to the .underside of the brim thereof, guide members upon the ends of the bracket plates,- combs slidably engaging said guide members on opposite sides of their longitudinal centers for horizontal sliding movement transversely of the hat, and fasteningA means disposed centrally between 'the guiding connections for securing said combs in adjusted position'.
ln testimony whereof, I alx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
