HAT-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 685,108, dated October 22, 1901.
Application filed July 26, 1900. Serial No. 24,900. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS T. CLoUsE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lansdowne, in the county of Delaware and State of Pennsylvania, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Fasteners, of
which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to hat-fasteners; and its object is to provide a device of this character which will securely hold a ladys hat upon her head and which will enable the hat to be easily put on and taken off and which can be very cheaply made or ornamented according as taste may dictate.
The invention consists in certain constructions of the parts hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 illustrates the location of my improved hat-fastener on a ladys hat. Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross-section of a portion of the hat and a cross-section of one of the fastellers secured thereto. Fig. 3 is an enlarged side elevation of one of the fasteners.
My improved hat-fastener comprises a flat strip or sheet of gutta-percha, tortoise-shell, or similar resilient material, which is bowed from end to end and is provided with an ap proximately broad or elliptical body or engaging portion a, from one end of which emanates a slightly-reduced or narrow elongated neck 17, provided with several holes c--in this instance four in numberand the broad flat body portion a is provided along one edge with teeth 6, which project laterally with respect to the neck, as shown best in Fig. 3. The said resilient sheet which comprises the fastener is rigidly secured in any suitable manner, one at each side of the hat, preferably at the points of the same which will come just behind the wearers ears, and the elliptical body portions of the fasteners slide down over and press inwardly upon the sides of the wearers head, thereby holding the hat in place. After the hat is placed on the wearers head the fasteners are pressed rearwardly to a slight extent, so as to cause the teeth e to engage with the strands of the wearers hair, which not only gives a greater security to the hat, but also has the appearance and performs the function of side-combs.
The means for attaching the fasteners to the hat may consist of stitching inserted through the sides of the hat and through the holes 0 in the narrow necks b, or, as shown in Fig. 2, such attaching means may consist of staples d, inserted through the holes 0 and clenched into the sides of the hat, but I do not limit the invention to any one particular form of attachingmeans.
It Will be seen that I have provided a very simple and yet a very effective hat-fastener which can be highly ornamented by rhinestones or the like or by a fanciful configuration, if desired, and'which will permit the hat to be readily taken off or put on and at the same time securely hold the hat in place after it has been put on.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is== The combination with a hat, of a fiat sheet of resilient material provided at its upper end with a neck rigidly secured to the inside of the hat-crown, and also provided with a flat body portion, a, broader than said neck and integral therewith and which also projects downwardly below said hat-crown, said broad flat body portion being adapted to press latorally against the side of awearers head and provided along one edge with teeth, 2, which project laterally with respect to the neck, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
THOMA$ T. CLOUSE.
