INVENTOH Arm/Mfrs,
UNITED STATES PATENT FFIGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 3, 1905.
Application filed March 14, 1906. Serial No. 250,004.
To tZZ wit/mt it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD D. HAMILTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Montavilla, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to combs for personal wear, and has for its object to provide a comb which can be securely fastened in the hair and which will effectively hold it from becoming disarranged.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view showing the combs extended, and Fig. 2 is a similar view showing them retracted. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 5 and 6 denote two combs which are slidably secured to a frame 7, the teeth of said combs being oppositely presented. The combs carry headed studs 8, working in slots 9 made in the frame. The frame carries a strip 10, having a projection 11 arranged to fit between the backs of the combs when they are extended to hold them in this position.
In use the combs are extended into the hair by pushing them outwardly from the frame, as shown in Fig. 1. They are securely held in this position by the projection 11, which fits between the combs, and thus prevents their accidental withdrawal from the hair. The device is therefore securely fastened in the hair and will effectively prevent it from becoming disarranged.
To remove the device from the hair, the projection 11 is withdrawn from between the combs, said combs and the frame being ma nipulated so that the former will clear the projection 11, after which the combs can be readily retracted.
The combs are provided with finger-pieces 12, so that they can be conveniently manipulated.
Having thus described my invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a frame, of combs slidably mounted on said frame and extensible laterally therefrom, the teeth of the combs being oppositely presented and means for holding said combs in extended position.
2. The combination with a frame, of combs slidably mounted on said frame and extensible laterally therefrom, and a locking member on the frame extensible between the combs to hold them in extended position.
3. The combination with a frame, of combs slidably mounted on said frame and extensible laterally therefrom, the teeth of the combs being oppositely presented.
ln testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDWARD D. HAMILTON.
