APPARATUS FOR DRIVING POSTS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 8, 1907.
Annlication filed June 15, 1906. Serial No. 321,906.
To a whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN A. MELLGREN, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Union, in the county of Carver and State of Minnesota, have invented. certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Driving Posts; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in apparatus for driving posts, stakes, &c. and the object of the invention is to produce a simple and efficient device of this nature which may be portable, being mounted upon a suitable truck and adapted to be moved conveniently from place to place.
The invention comprises, essentially, a standard upon which is mounted a weighted member and in the provision of suitable automaticallyactuated releasing mechanism whereby the weight may be allowed to fall as it is raised a suitable distance to give sufficient momentum to the weight for driving a The invention consists, further, in various details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
I illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which 0 Figure 1 is a side elevation of my apparatus. Fig. 2 is a front view of a portion of the apparatus supporting the weight, and Fig. 3-is a detail perspective view of the releasing mechanism.
Reference now being the drawings by letter, truck having an axle wheels C are journaled. Said suitable handles A and legs A had to the details of A designates a hand- B, upon which the truck has A reel D is the truck and is provided with a handle D. Rising from the truck are the upright standards E E with a cross-piece F connecting their upper ends, and cross-pieces H are fastened between the standards near their upper ends. A sheave I is fastened to said cross-piece F and over which a cable K is ladapted to run, one end of said cable being connected to an eye N of the rod N, which is fastened to a block 0, carrying the two latch-levers Q, pivoted thereto. Said latch-levers, as shown clearly in the detail perspective view of the drawings, are curved slightly, and
hooks O are formed upon their inner edges adapted to engage the head R, mounted upon the pin or lug R, secured to the weight S. Springs T are connected at their inner ends, one to each of said levers Q, and the outer end of each spring is fastened to a guide-piece J, which guide-pieces fit over the outer edges of the standards and which are connected by means of a bar J, which latter supports the block 0.
The operation of my invention is simple and will be readily understood when taken in connection with the drawings forming a part of this application, and is as as follows: The truck may be wheeled about wherever it is desired to use the apparatus and positioned so that the weight will be directly over the post or stake to be driven. The weight is raised to its highest position by the operator turning the reel, said catches normally engaging and holding the weight until the upper ends of the levers come in contact with the inclined edges of the braces H, which will cause the upper ends of the levers to be tilted toward each other and their hooks disengaged from the head R, which is secured by the lug R, projecting from the weight, thereby allowing the latter to fall. As the rope is unreeled the latches or levers will automatically engage the head connected to said weight and the weight may be again raised and another blow imparted to the post.
What I claim is- An apparatus for driving posts comprising a truck with wheels at one end thereof and legs for supporting the opposite end of the truck, a standard rising from one end of the truck provided with intersecting cross-pieces fixed diagonally to the standard, guidestrips upon the inner faces of the upright portions of the standard, a weight mounted between the uprights of the standard and provided with fingers adapted to engage said guides, a headed lug projecting from the top of the weight, a cross-bar having T-shaped ends with grooves in the outer faces thereof adapted to receive said guides, the outer edges of the grooved ends of said -cross-piece being flush with the opposite faces of the uprights of the standard, said cross-piece hav- IOC gaging standard, and a Windlass about which the cable is adapted to be wound, as set forth. :0
In testimony whereof I hereunto afliX my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN A. MELLGREN. Witnesses:
ADIN NELSON, ALICE J. CARLsoN.
