Description

(No Modelfl J. E. HENSLEY. HOISTING MACHINE.
No. 433,002. Patented July 29, 1890.
MVENTOR 7Jm zzz fwz A TTOIM'EY.
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN EDWARD HENSLEY, OF ALLENDALE, ILLINOIS.
HOISTING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 433,002, dated July 29, 1890.
Application filed May 28, 1.890- Se'rial No. 353,427: (No model.)
To on whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J OHN EDWARD Hans- LEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Allendale, in the county of Wabash and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hoisting-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in hoisting apparatus, designed more particularly for raising and lowering wagon-bodies; and it has for its object among others to provide a simple, cheap, an d efficient device of this character that can be readily erected in a shed or other desired place, and which shall be composed of few parts, and which will require a minimum of power to operate it.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be specifically defined by the appended claim.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, forms apart of this specification, and in which is shown a perspective view, with parts broken away, of a support-such, for-instance, as the framework of a shed-with my apparatusin position.
Referring to the details of the drawing by letter, A designates the sills, and B the framing, of a structuresay, for instance, a shed and C are two parallel bars supported by the upper cross-bars a of the frame, and extend ing lengthwise of the said frame.
D is a cross-shaft suitably journaled in the said parallel bars and provided centrally with a drum E, and upon each end with a smaller drum F.
Gr are parallel bars supported at one end on the bars a in the framing, and extending at right angles to the bars 0 and beneath the same, and at the other end secured to the under side of said bars C. I) are pulleys carried by shafts suitably journaled in said bars and arranged one near each end thereof.
H is a rectangular frame supported on one of the uprights of the framing B, and within this frame is journaled a drum 0, formed or provided at one end with a ratchet-wheel d, and on the shaft of this drum is a crank and handle a, by which it is operated.
f is a gravitypawl pivoted on the pivot g on the rectangular frame 11, and engaging the ratchet wheel to prevent retrograde movement thereof,
I is a rope or chain secured at one end to the drum 0 and at the other end secured to the central drum E, passing over one of the pulleys b and under the other, as shown.
II are bars which are designed to pass under and support the wagon-bed, as shown, and I are ropes or chains, one upon each side of the bed and formed at each end with a loop or eye 11 to receive the ends of the said bars, the ropes or chains 1' being connected at their centers by the ropes or chains J, the other ends of which are connected to the smaller drums F.
K are cross-pieces supported on the sills to support the wagon-bed to provide room for the passage of the bars II thereunder, when desired.
The operation is apparent, and a description thereof is not deemed necessary.
What I claim as new is- The combination, with the frame and the sills, of the parallel bars 0, the parallel bars G at right angles thereto, the shaft supported by the bars (1 and carrying a central and two smaller drums, the pulleys b, journaled be tween the bars G at right angles to the drums, the rectangular frame H, the drum journaled therein, the ropes connecting said drum with the central drum, the bars 11, the ropes I, having looped ends engaging the bars 11, and the ropes connecting the same with the smaller drums, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN EDXVARD HENSLEY.
Witnesses:
JOHN CAMPBELL,
A. J. KING.
