TROUSERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 26, 1907.
Application filed January 24, 1906. Serial No. 297,569.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LOUIS M. NATHAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city and county of Denver and State of Oolorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trousers; and I do declare the following to be a'full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates, generally speaking, to improvements in trousers, but relates specifically to means attached to the trousers and extending from the crotch upwardly in both front and rear and connected with the garment at points corresponding with the points where the buttons are attached to facilitate the proper support of the trousers when the suspenders passing over the shoulders of the wearer are attached.
This device may be termed an inverted suspender, since it is connected with the garment as aforesaid and extends down wardly from both front and rear in a manner similar to the regular suspenders, except that the latter pass upwardly.
To be more specific, the device consists of two strips of suitable material, each of which is connected with the band or upper part of the trousers in front at one extremity, at the upper part of the garment in the rear at the other extremity, and at the crotch intermediate the said extremities.
The improvement is preferably formed of two continuous strips of material. It is evident, however, that four half-strips may be employed, since it would not be absolutely necessary that the strips should be continuous at the crotch, though this is preferable and simplifies the attachment of the improvement to the garment. It is preferred that between the extremities of each strip and its attachment at the crotch the strip be free from attachment to the fabric of the trousers. It must be understood, however, that the invention is not precisely limited in this regard.
Having briefly outlined my improvement, as well as the function it is intended to perform, I will proceed to describe the same in detail, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which is illustrated an embodiment thereof.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a rear perspective view of a pair of trousers equipped with my improvements, the fabric being partly broken away to facilitate illustration of the improved feature. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. the improvement in detail and on a larger scale, the inverted suspender-strips being extended.
The same reference characters indicate the same parts in all the views.
Let the numeral 5 designate a pair of trousers of the ordinary make.
My improvement consists, in its preferable form, of two continuous strips, each of which is designated in its entirety by the numeral 6. These strips are attached at their extremities at points 7 and 8 in the front and rear of the garment, While their central portions are attached at the crotch 9. These strips are attached to the inside of the garment at the points 7 and 8. The points 7 correspond with the points where the two inner suspender-buttons are attached to the trousers, while the points 8 correspond with the points where the two rear Suspender-buttons are attached to the trousers. In Fig. 3 the central dotted lines A on the strips 6 indicate the-location of the stitches or the means for fixedly securing the strips to the crotch of the trousers, while the dotted lines B at the extremities of the strips indicate the stitching or means of securing the extremities of the strips to the band or upper part of the garment. If desired, the strips may be adjustable between their extremities. This may be accomplished by providing each strip with a short member 10 and connecting it with the body of the member by means of a buckle 12. By leaving the strips unsecured between the points A and B it becomes practicable to shorten them by the use of the buckles, if for any reason it should become necessary.
The chief function of my improvement is to cause the supporting pull exerted by the shoulder-suspenders to act from the crotch of the trousers both from the front, and rear. In the absence of this improvement after the garment has been worn for-some time the pull of the suspenders not being properly applied to the center or crotch of the rment allows it to be drawn out of shape. in addibig. 3 is a detail View showing tion to the main or chief feature of the improvement it may be stated that the said strips of material form a reinforcement and give the garment increased Wearing capacity.
While my improved inverted suspender' strips are not limited to any special shape or design, it is preferred to make their front portions of considerable Width, as indicated at D. If these portions of the strips Were narrow, the shape of the strips under some circumstances might be visible from the outside of the garment; but by making them of considerable Width, as or approximately as indicated in the drawings, this difficulty is entirely overcome, and in addition to this advantage this increased Width of the strips reinforces the garment to a considerable extent.
In-Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings the suspenger-buttons are designated by the let ter Having thus described my invention, What I claim is 1. A pair of trousers provided With a strip of material attached to the crotch thereof and at the upper part of the garment in line With the pull of the garment-suspending means in both front and rear.
2. A pair of trousers provided with strips of material attached to the crotch of the garment and at the upper portion thereof in line with the pull of the garment-suspending means, in both front and rear.
3. A pair of trousers provided With strips of material attached to the crotch of the garment and at the upper portion thereof at points corresponding With the points Where the Suspender-buttons are attached.
4. A pair of trousers provided with tWo strips of material attached intermediate their extremities at the crotch of the garment and at their extremities to points in the front and rear corresponding with the points of attachment of the Suspender-buttons.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of tWo Witnesses.
LOUIS M. NATHAN.
