ABRAHAM ATLAS LEVI, OF SYRACUSE, NEIV YORK.
SUSPENDER-END.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 661,4:08, dated November 6, 1900.
Application filed July 28, 1900. Serial No. 25,122. \No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABRAHAM ATLAS LEVI, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Suspender-Ends, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description. 7
The object of this invention is to provide suspenders with means capable of connecting them to the buttons of the garment either-independently of the buttonhole portions of the suspenders or to be used jointly therewith and reinforce the same, as may be desired or become necessary by the wearing or breaking of the suspender-ends; and to that end the invention consists in the combination, with a suspender-end, of a wire secured at its ends thereto and bent intermediately into the form of a button-receiving loop lying freely on the buttonhole portion of the Suspender-end, as hereinafter m ore fully described, and set forth in the claims. 7
In the annexed drawings, Figure l is an inner face view of a portion of a pair of suspenders embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged inner face view of the front suspender-ends. Fig. 3 is a detached face view of the reinforcing devices of said suspenderends. Fig. 4: is a detached view of the reinforcing device used on the rear suspenderends, and Figs. 5 and 6 are respectively front and rear views of a modification of my invention.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the webbing or main portions of the suspenders, and Z) and 0 denote, respectively, the frontand rearsuspender-ends. Each of the front suspender-ends b is usually made duplex to connect to two buttons on the front of the garment, and I preferably form them in one piece of leather, terminating with the usual buttonholes and formed intermediately with a tubular portion, as shown at I). These front suspender-ends I reinforce by extra button-receivin g loops (1 form ed on the ends of a band 01, inserted into the tubular portion 3) of the Suspender-ends. Said band, with its loops, may be formed of any suitable material. I preferably form these of a continuous piece of wire (Z, having its end portions folded back upon the central portion and united therewith, as shown at d, or in any other suitable manner. This central portion of thewire, with the contiguous folded end portions, is inserted into the tubular portion b of the suspendenends, which tubular portions are sewed along theirlongitudinal edges, and thus retain the wire therein. The folds of said wire protrude from said tubular portion and are bent into the shape of loops (l for receiving through them the buttons on the garment. These loops lie loosely on the buttonhole portions 11 of the Suspender-ends. Said loops can thus be used either jointly with or separately from the buttonhole portions b as may be desired or become necessary by the wearing or breaking of the suspendeaends.
The rear sus .)ender-end cI reinforce by an extra loop 6, formed of suitable material, preferably of wire, secured to the suspenderend above the buttonhole 0 thereof and shaped to receive through it the button of the garment. WVhen the buttonhole portion of said suspender-end is formed of leather sewed onto the end of the webbing A,as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings, I form the extra loop c of a piece of wire bent intermediate its ends into the shape of the loop and terminating with straight parallel portions inserted into a sewed fold of the end of the webbing, as shown by dotted lines 0 in Fig. 4 of the drawings.
I do not, however, wish to be limited specifically to either of the hereinbefore described constructions of the reinforcements of the suspender-ends, as I find that I can attain the desired result on a suspender-end formed of braid by forming the loop 0. of a wire crossed above the said loop and wrapped with its ends tightly around the braid, so as to firmly grip the same, as shown at e in Figs. 5 and (I of the drawings.
In either of the described constructions I maintain the feature of the reinforcingdoop being free from the buttonhole portion of the suspender-end for the purpose hereinbefore described.
What I claim as my invention is-- 1. The combination with a Suspender-end of a wire secured at its ends thereto and bent intermediately into the form of a button-reeeiving loop lying freely on the buttonhole folded back upon the central portion and united therewith and inserted into the aforesaid tubular portion, and the folds of said wire protruding from the said tubular portion and bent into the shape of button-reoeiving loops lying free on the buttonhole portions of the Suspender-ends as set forth.
