llll i t'lftiit M liiiltilJt Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented lltug. 15, 1905.
in connection with the accompanying drawingsand the numerals of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, iii--- lFigure 1, a view in front elevation of a niatch box constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, an end view thereof; Fig. 3 a plan view thereof; Fig. t, a view thereof with the lid swung into its open though not fully-open position; Fig. 5. a broken view of the box in vertical section, showing the cigar-cutter in its closed position; Fig. 6, a broken sectional view of the upper end of the box, showing the cigar-cutter in its open position; Fig. 7, a broken rear view showing the upper end of the box; Fig. 8, a broken View of the upper end of the box, showing the lid .in its open though not fully-open position; Fig. 9, a detached perspective view of the cutter.
My invention relates to an improvement in match-boxes, the object being to provide a match-box at a trifling additional cost with a convenient and effective cigar-cutter.
With these ends in view my invention consists in a match-box having certain details of construction, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
As herein shown, my invention is embodied. in a pocket match-box designed to receive paper safety-matches supplied to the trade in small book-like packages and known as safety book-matches. However, my invention is by no means limited to embodiment in such match-boxes, but may be applied to other kinds of match-boxes. As shown, the body of the box has one side and one end open and is struck up from a single piece of sheet metal and comprises a back 2, tapering sides 3 3., bottom i, and in\vaidly-extending matchholding fingers 5, formed integral with and extending inwardly from the lower ends of the outer edges of the sides 3, the upper ends of which are rounded to form, as it were, ears 6, corresponding to each other and extending above the upper edge of the back 2. The lid 7 is shaped to close the open side and open end of the said body and corresponds in width to the said body and is formed at its upper end with an arch 8 corresponding in curvature to the curvature of the ears 6, so that when the lid 7 is closed its arch 8 forms a close joint with the edges of the ears. At its upper end the back 2 is formed. with one of the knuckles 9 of a hinge, the other knuckles i0 10 of which are formed upon the extreme upper end of the lid, or, more exactly, upon the edge of the short leg of the arch 8. A pin ll, passed through the knuckles t) and 10 .10, completes the hinge. At its lower end the lid is formed with a linger 12, which snaps into a notch 13 in the end l of the body of the box, which as a whole has a flat wedge-like form. The paper matches let are formed in strips and have their butt-cnds inserted into the fold of a piece of heavy paper bent upon itself to form a backing 15 and a surface it for the application of afriction igniting-film 17. The
package thus produced needs no further description, as it is well known in the trade under the name of the safety book-match. Of course other matches might be used in the box, which, however, in the special form shown is particularly designed for the use of the special match just described.
\Vithin the arch 8 of the lid 7 I locate a longitudinallymovable cigar-cutter 18, semicircular in cross-section, coi'iforming to the curvature of the said arch and furnished midway of its length with an opening 19, the rear edge of which is sharpened to form a cutting edge 20. When the said cutter is drawn to the limit of its outward movement, its hole 19 registers with a corresponding hole 21. in the arch 8, so that the tip of a cigar may be inserted into the two alined holes, after which the cutter is pushed inward and the tip cut off by the knifeed go 20 coacting with the opposite edge 22 of the hole 521. The cutter is held in place by the sliding engagei'nent of its outer edge with the knuckles 9 and 10 and by the sliding engagement of its inner edge with a retainingrib 23, located upon the inner face of the lid. 7 at or close to the point where the same begins to curve to form the arch 8. The rib 23 may be applied to the lid '7, as shown, or struck up therefrom or arranged in any other way. it stop-linger 24:, formed. at the inner end of the cutter l8 and engaging with the rib 23, prevents its removal. The outer end of the cutter is furnished with a disk-shaped fingerpiece 25.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that at a trifling additional cost I greatly increase the convenience and usefulness of a match-box by providing it with a simple and effective cigar-cutter.
1n carrying out my invention some changes from the construction herein shown and described may be made. I would therefore have it understood that I do not limit myself thereto, but hold myself at liberty to make such departures therefrom as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a match-box, the combination with a body having one side and one end open, of a lid closing the open side and open end of the said body and having its upper end bent to form an arch formed with an opening and hinged to the upper end of the back of the body; and a longitudinally-movable cigar-cutter of semicircular cross-section located within the said arch to which it conforms in curvature and upon the inner face of which it has bearing and formed with an opening having a cutting edge which, when the cutter is drawn into its open position, is brought into registration with the opening in the arch, and the said cutter being provided at its outer end with a finger-piece.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
