Application-med July 20, 1922. Serial No". 576,324.
To all whom t my coneem: l
Be it known that I, JULIUs OPPENHEIM, a citizen oit the United States, and a resident of the 'city of New York, borou h of Manhattan, in the county and State o New York, have invented a new and Improved Match Case, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to match cases for ll@ book matches and the same is in the nature of an improvement over a similar device covered by Letters Patent of the United States No. 749,534, and a reissue for the same No. 12,290. In the aforementioned patents it l was necessary to strike or ignite the matches before closing the cover ofthe case. 4'lilhe y present invention seeks as a principal object a match case in which the cover therefore is provided with a slot which registers with 2@ the frictionmaterial or scratching surface of the book matches when the cover is in closed position.
The invention further contemplates a match' case which is extremely simple in its construction, inexpensive to manufacture and which is highly eiiicient in its purpose. With the above recited and otherobjects in view, the invention resides in the novel construction set forth in the following spec- Sl@ ification, particularly pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanyin drawing, it being understood that the rig t is reserved to embodiments other than those actually illustrated herein to the full extend indicated by the general mean-v ing of the terms in which the claims are expressed. l
In the drawing- Figure 1 is a front view of a match case constructed in accordance with the invention with the cover in open position'.
Fig. 2 is a similar view of the cover in closed position.
Fig. 3 is a side v,elevation with the cover partially open, parts being broken away and shown in section to disclose the underlying structure. y Referring to the drawing by characters of reference, the body of the case consists of a back 10, upturned integral lside walls 11 and an upturned integral end wall 12 having an integral extremity 13 which is bent inwardly to lie between the 'free ed es ofthe side walls 11 and substantially us therewith to afford a receiving space 14 within which the connected endjof the book and matches are arranged. 'llhe extremity 13 is slotted as at 15 to expose therethrough the friction material or striking surface for the matches. The side walls 11 are ofgradually ncreasing width frornthe closed end 12 to the opposite end in order to more closely conform to the general shape of the book matches. A cover 16 havin downturned extremities 17 and V18 is hinge ly connected as at 19 to the end of the back 10 atthe open or free end of the case. 'llhe downturnedf end 17 is provided 'with a lug 20 which frictionally engages a depression 21.in the end Wall 12 for i the purposeof holding the'case in closed condition. rllhe cover 16 is slotted as at 22 and saidU slot 22 is disposed in registry or alignment with the slot 15 when the cover is in closed position, whereby the user may ignite or strike a match on the friction or striking surface after the cover is closed.
v When in closed condition the end wall 18 serves to close the open end of the case body to completely house the headed ends of the matches. Preferably in use of the case, the cardboard back or coveringv with the book matchesis severed 'or torn oil as illustrated in Fig. 1. In order to provide means forattaching the case to a watch chain or the like, the downturned extremity constituting the end wally 18 has attached thereto an eye or ring 23. y
I claim:
1. A match case for book matches provided with an i nition surface, said case comprising a bo y for receiving the book matches and a cover hinged to said body, said cover being formed with an opening opposite said ignition surface whereby a match may be brought into frictional engagement with said ignition surface while said cover is closed.
2. The combination with a match box comprising a back having a. piece to partly overlie a package of matches, said holdlng piece having its central portion o en to provide an aperture through which t e matches may be ignited on the friction material on the package, of a hinged lid or cover'for said box having an aperture which is adapted to register with the aperture of said holdln piece when the lid or cover is closed to a ford means through which the matches may be ignited. i JULIUS PPENHEIM.
