Description
No. 771,553. PATENTED 001 4, 1904.
T. F. KELLEY.
GOFFIN CASE.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 29, 1904.
NO MODEL.
UNITED STATES Patented October 4:, 1904.
THOMAS F. KELLEY, OF GALION, OHIO.
COFFlN-CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters latent No. 771,553, dated October 4, 1904.
Application filed March 29, 1904:.
To all whom it warty concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS F. KELLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Galion, in the county of Crawford and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ooflin-Cases, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to coflin-cases, and has for its object a metallic case which shall embody strength and durability, together with simplicity of construction.
A'further object is to provide an improved closure which cannot be removed after it is put on the case, whereby the coffin will be completely protected against molestation.
Improved details in the construction and arrangements of the various parts of the invention will be apparent from the following description and claim when read in connection with the appended drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front end elevation of the case. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section, and Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2 looking toward the front end of the case.
Referring specifically to the drawings, the case 5 is preferably constructed of sheet-steel, which is stamped or pressed and jointed to form the substantially rectangular shaped structure shown, having an arched top 6. The case has an opening in front and a marginal flange 7, to which the lid 8 is secured by bolts 9. Said lid comprises a flat plate having on the inner side near its bottom two catches or hooks 10, which extend behind the flange 7 at the bottom of the case and afford convenient means for supporting the lid while it is being bolted to the flange.
At 11 are indicated spring-latches, which Serial No. 200,553. (No model.)
are secured to the inner side of the lid, near the top thereof, and which slip behind the flange 7 on the sides of the case. The latches extend under guide-straps 12, secured to the lid, and are pressed normally outwardly in locking position by a spring 13 between them, which is supported under a strap 1 secured to the lid. The latches are properly offset from the lid and have beveled ends, so that they will readily slip behind the flange when the lid is put on, after which it will be impossible to remove it, and the coflin will therefore be completely protected, as the latches cannot be manipulated.
At 15 are indicated rollers which are journaled in and extend between the sides of the case and on which the coflin sets. These rollers are for the purpose of facilitating the placing of the coffin in the case, and by inclining them downwardly toward the rear end thereof, as shown, the coflin can be readily put in its proper place.
Having thus described my invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is
A coffin-case having an openingin front and a marginal flange, a lid bolted to the flange and having hooks which extend behind the flange at the bottom of the case, and springlatches on the lid extending behind the flange on the sides of the case.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
THOMAS F. KELLEY.
