UNITED STATES- PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH DEVINE, OF CAMBRIA, MICHIGAN.
BU RlAL-CASKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 673,246, dated April 30, 1901.
Application filed December 27, 1900. Serial No. 41,207. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it may oon/cern:
Be it known that I, J osEPH DEVINE, a citivZen of the United States, residing at Cambria, in the county of Hillsdale and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burial-Gaskets; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. p
The invention relates to burial-Gaskets.
The obj ect of the invention is to provide an indestructible water and vermin proof burialcasket which shall be simple of construction and comparatively inexpensive of production.
With this and other minor objects in View the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a perspective view of my improved burialcasket, showing the cover separated therefrom. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional View of the burial-casket with the cover attached thereto.
l denotes the casket, and 2 its cover. The casket is preferably made. of sheet metal, galvanized iron, or steel, and is provided with interior metallic braces or strengthening-pieces 3, which are riveted in place and to the upper ends of which the handles 4. are secured. The upper edge of the casket is provided with a ange 5 to receive the flanged edge of the cover 2, and between these anges is placed a packing 6. The cover is secured to the casket-body by screws or similar fastening means and is provided with a cap 7 to cover the glass in the cover. This casket may be painted in imitation of any of the woods employed in the construction of caskets or may be otherwise ornamented or draped to suit the taste of the purchaser, and is intended when placed in the ground to be entirely inclosed within a metallic box, vermin and water proof.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and advantages of Imy improved burial-casket will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A metallic casket comprising a body portion and a cover secured thereto, said body portion being provided with interior strengthening-strips and handles having their Shanks inserted through the sides of the casket and connected to the ends of said strips, substantially as set forth.
2. A burial-casket comprising a body portion provided with interior strengtheningstrips which extend across the bottom of said casket and up against the sides thereof and are located within said casket and have their ends formed with hooks, handles having baillike Shanks which extend through the sides of the casket and are engaged with the hook ends of said strengthening-strips, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOSEPH DEVINE.
