To all whom it natty concern:

Be it known that I, JosErH D. DWYER, a citi-' Zen of the United States, residing at Minooka, in the county of Grundy and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Discharging- Chutes for l/Vagon- Beds; and l'do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to a discharging-chute or attachment for wagon-beds; and it consists of certain novel features of combination and construction of parts, the preferred form whereof Will be hereinafter clearly set forth, and pointed out in the claims.

The main object of my invention, among others, is to provide a simple form of attachment or discharging-chute for delivering the contents of a wagon-box which will be found very convenient and reliably efficient in character and adapted for a great variety of purposes, as in delivering the contents of a wagonbed directly into a hopper or chute of an elevator, as grain of all kinds, whereby a great amount of arduous labor will be avoided.

Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter made clearly apparent, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, made a part of this application, and in which Figure 1 shows my invention complete as applied to use upon a wagon-bed of the usual or any preferred construction. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of Fig. 1 on line 2 2. Fig. 3 is a perspective detail view of my appliance or discharging-chute and also showing a contiguous part of the side-board of a wagonbed and the closure or lid for cooperation with the discharging-chute proper. Fig. 4 is a detail View in section of my chute, taken substantially on the dotted line 1 4; of Fig. 2, an auxiliary chute being illustrated with its outer end partly broken away.

Referring to the numerals on the drawings, which will be employed for reference to the various details of my invention and cooperating accessories, 1 and 2 designate the carrying-wheels of the wagon, while 3 indicates the wagon-bed, and 4t and 5 designate the sideboards of the wagon-bed, which is of the usual or any preferred character or pattern.

It will be understood that my dischargingchute may be secured to either side of the wagon-bed as may be deemed most convenient, though in the accompanyingdrawings]. have shown the same as cooperating with the left side of the wagon-bed or side-board 4.

By reference to Figs. 1 and 2 it will be observed that one-half, more or less, of the middle portion of the flo0r-section 3 is cut away, and secured to the edges of the opening thus formed is my discharging-chute 6, which is formed any preferred size and of any suitable material, preferably of sheet metal, having the side flanges 7, said flanges being provided with apertures 8 at proper intervals, whereby it may be bolted to a contiguous part of the edge of the opening in the floor-section. The outer end of the discharging-chute 6 is made of proper size to insure that the contentsot' the wagon-bed, whether of ear-corn or other variety of grain, will freely pass out therethrough.

Upon each side of the discharging end of the chute 6 I provide the grooves 9, adapted to receive the edges of the closure-section 10, said closure being carried between the guide ways or cleats 11 and 12, attached directly to a proper part of the side-board 3, whereby the closure 10 maybe elevated or lowered, as desired.

In Fig. 2 I have shown the closure 10 in a lowered position, whereby the discharging end of the chute 6 will be completely closed. The upper edge of the closure 10 is provided with a suitable handle 13 and with the looking hook or latch 14:, designed to cooperate with the staple or keeper 15, whereby when the closure is elevated it may be readily secured in such position. It will be observed that the closure is to be left in a normally downward or closed position, thereby preventing any of the contents of the wagon-bed from casually falling out of the end of the chute, and thus fitting the wagon-bed for all ordinary uses to which it may be placed.

I have also provided a sup flementary chutesection 16, which may be made of suitable sheet metal and is preferably tapered at its outer end, its inner end being of proper size to telescope with the outer side of the chute 6.

Upon each side of the chute 6 I provide the fingers or lugs 17, adapted to take into the bayonet or keyhole slot 18, provided in the flange of the chute 16, whereby the supplementary chute may be readily disposed in its operative position or in cooperation with the main chute 6 and easily removed therefrom. The supplementary chute 16 being of sheet metal, as before stated, may be placed within the main chute 6 when not required for use, it being observed that the outer ends of the side flanges 19 are properly tapered or reduced in size to compensate for the inclined floor of the chute 6, whereby said side flanges will not project above the floor of the wagon-bed.

It is desired at times to dispose the chute 16 at different planes. 1 therefore have provided a keeper 20, the body portion of which is provided with an elongated slot 21. The keeper 20 is adjustably secured to the bottom of the chute 6 by a bolt 22, said bolt passing through the bottom of the chute 6 and into the slot 21, by which means said keeper may be adjusted inwardly or outwardly, as desired. The outer end of the keeper 20 is bent downwardly and outwardly and is designed to engage the inner end of the chute 16, and as said chute is pivotally secured to the main chute 6 by unloosening the nut upon the bolt 22 the keeper may be moved inwardly or outwardly and the outer end of the chute 16 lowered or raised.

In some instances the side walls of the chute 6 may be made flaring, so that the opening in the bottom of the bed will cover a greater area. It will be understood, however, that the discharge-opening in the chute will remain the same size, suitable end sections being provided to close the space between the flaring Walls and said discharge-opening.

It will thus be seen that l have provided a reliably efficient form of discharging-chute or attachment for Wagon-beds of the usual or any preferred construction, and while I have described the preferred details of combination and construction of parts deemed necessary in carrying out my invention I wish to comprehend such substantial equivalents and substitutes as may be regarded as falling fairly within the scope and purview of my invention.

Having thus fully described the construction and manner of using my improved chute, further reference to the details is deemed unnecessary.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The herein described wagon-bed attachment, comprising a main discharging-chute secured to the edges of an opening provided in the floor of a wagon-bed, a vertically-disposed closure for the open end of said chute, and a supplementary chute cooperating with said main chute and adapted to be pivotally secured to the outer end thereof, a keeper movably secured to the lower side of the main chute and adapted to engage the inner end of the supplementary chute, said keeper having a longitudinal slot in the body portion thereof, and a bolt passing through the bottom of said main chute and the longitudinal slot in the keeper whereby said keeper may be adjusted inwardly and outwardly and the outer end of the supplementary chute lowered and raised as desired, substantially as set forth.

2. In a wagon-bed attachment, a main discharging-chute secured to an opening provided in the floor of the wagon-bed, a vertically-movable closure in the open end of said chute, a hook and keeper therefor adapted to secure said closure in an open position, a supplementary chute pivotally secured to the open end of said discharge-chute, and means carried by the lower side of said discharge-chute to raise and lower the outer end of said supplementary chute as desired, all combined substantially as set forth.

3. In an attachment for wagon-beds, the combination with a discharging-chute, of a supplementary chute pivotally secured at the open end thereof, a keeper having a longitudinal slot in its body portion adjustably secured to the lower side of said discharge-chute and adapted to be moved outwardly or inwardly whereby the outer end of said supplementary chute will be raised or lowered, substantially as set forth.
