PATENT FMECE.
SUPPORT FOR CLOTHES-LINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 775,760, dated November 22, 1904.
Application filed uly 15, 1904- Serial No. 216,699 .(No model.) 7
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I,HENRY J. MERZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at'Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Supports for Clothes- Lines; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the inven 'tion, such as will enable others skilled inthe art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in supports for clothes-lines; and the object of the invention is to produce a device which may be attached to the end of a pole and so arranged as to securely engage and hold the line supported by it.
More specifically my invention comprises a plate adapted for attachment to a pole and provided with a groove designed to receive a line, and in the provision of a spiral coil held to said plate and designedto engage and hold the rope within said groove.
The invention consists, further, in various details of construction and in combinations and arrangements of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this application, and in which- Figure l is a perspective view showing my device applied to a line. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail perspective of the plate and the spiral coil carried thereby. Fig. 3 is a sectional view through said plate.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a plate, whichis made, preferably, of metal and is bent so as to have two wings A, which are apertured, as at a, and to receive screws or other fastening means, whereby the plate is securely held to the pole B. The central portion of said plate is provided with a groove D, running transversely across the plate and adapted to receive and hold the line E. The ridges along the marginal edges of said grooved portion are provided with slots F, which are diagonally disposed in relation to each other.
K designates a spiral coilof metal the ends of which project through said slots, and N designates a lug passing through the central portion of said coil and engaging the bottom of said grooved portion, thereby securely anchoring the said coil to the plate A, and each end of the coil, as will be observed, is disposed in different directions and the same are spaced apart, allowing a sufficient space transversely between the two ends for the admission of the clothes-line, which after being inserted between the ends and turned at right angles will be securely held within the groove of said plate.
By the provision of the simple and efiicient means disclosed it will be observed that the clothes-line holder may be easily and quickly applied to the clothes-line and may be moved from one part to the other of the line and will be held from disengagement therewith as the line or pole may swing sidewise.
While I have shown a particular detailed construction of the apparatus illustrating my clothes-line support, it will be understood that I may change the details of the construction of the same without in any way departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A support for clothes-lines, comprising a plate, having a transverse groove adapted to be fastened to a pole, the ridges of said groove being provided with diagonally-disposed slots, a spiral coil fastened to the under side of said plate, and having the ends passing through said slots and extending in opposite directions over said groove, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
