SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 307,669, dated November 4, 1884.

To all whom, it 77mg concern Be it known that I, HUGH Mcln'rosr-r, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Decorah, in the county of Vinneshiek and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vire-Stretchers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others'skilled in the art to which it ap pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a side view ofmy improved wire stretcher as applied between posts for tightening the wire. Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the device as applied for tightening the wires endwise through the post. Fig. 3 is a sectional view through line a a:, Fig. 2,- and Fig. 4 is a top view of the device.

My invention has relation to wirestretchers; and it consists in an improvement uponv the wirestretcher for which Letters Patent of the United States No. 284,969 were granted to me on the 11th day of September, 1883, the nature of which said improvement will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, A denotes a T-shaped casting having a projection, B, at right angles to its downwardly-projecting part A. The projection B has a screwthreaded aperture for the insertion of the screw 0, uponv the upper end of which is a swiveled head, 1.), having a transverse groove or depression, d. The other end of the screw is flattened and provided with an oblong eye, 6. At opposite ends of the arms formed by cross-bar A are grooved rollers F, running loosely upon their axlesf. The entire device except the screw may be made of cast-iron at a very small cost if made in large quantities.

By reference to the drawings it will be seen that this device may be used in the same mannor as the wire-stretcher described in my Patout No. 284,969, for tightening any one of the strands of wire by placing'the rollers F 13 upon the wire between the posts, so that the wire will pass across the swiveled head D and rest in the groove of the same, so that by turning the screw by inserting a key or lever through the eye at its lower end the head D will be brought to bear against the wire from the under side, so as to draw the same upwardly between the rollers, as shown in Fig. 1, and thereby take up the slack. If it is desired to tighten the wires endwise through the end post, 1?, thedevice is placed in the position shown in Figs. 2 and 3, with its projec tion B bearing against one side of the post, the end of the wire to be tightened being fastened in the screw-eye 6. By holding the screw steady and turning cross-bar A upon it it will be worked through the post, so as to draw the wire taut. The free end of the screw may be inserted for this purpose either through a hole bored through the post, as in the drawings, or the wires may be passed through perforated brackets G, affixed upon the post, and the free end of the screw inserted through said brackets and connected to the wire on the other side thereof.

Havin g thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The improved wire-stretcher herein shown and described, consisting of the T-shaped casting A A, having rollers F F, and screwthreaded projection B, in combination with the screw C, having a narrow slot or eye at one end, adapted to be inserted through a hole bored through the post, and having the swiveled and grooved head I) at the other end, the whole constructed and combined to operate substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein shown and specified.
