WALL STRUCTURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 23, 1913.
Application led September 19, 1912. Serial No. 721,246.
To all 'whom it may concern Be it known that we, GEORGE A. WIELAND and WILLIAM F.. ALDRIGII, citizens -ofthe United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco, State oit California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wall Structures; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to wall supporting structures.
The object of the invention resides in the provision of a wall structure which will facilitate the construction of walls wherein there is employed composition plaster boards or the like.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a wall structure which includes an improved form of studding and plaster board fastening clip, the latter de` tachably interlocking with the studding and adapted securely to hold the plaster boards in place. l
With the aboveand other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and com- Fig. 1, Fig. 3, a section on the line of Fig. 1, Fig. 4, a perspective view of a fragment of one of the studdings employedin the structure. Fig. 5, a detail perspective view of one of the board fastening clips with the tongue at the respective ends of the clip in the position they would occupy before being bent into securing relation to tht` plaster board, and Fig. 6, a detail perspective view of one of the board fastening clips with the tongues at the respective ends of the clip in the position they would occupy after being bent into fastening relation to the plaster boards.
Referring to the drawings a Wall structure is shown as comprising a plurality of vertical studdings A. Each of these studdings A are U-shape in cross section so as to form parallel spaced arms 10 and 11. Formed in the arms 10 and 11 at corresponding points and in vertical alinelnent are openings B and C respectively. The lower ends of each of the openings B and C are reduced as at 12 and 13 respectively for a purpose that will presently appear. The board securing clip of the structure is shown as comprising a plate D provided with a central offset portion 111 forming shoulders 15 and 16. The longitudinal edges of the l offset portion of the fastening clip are pro` vided respectively with laterally directed flanges 17 and 18 whereby said clip is strengthened. The ends of the fastening clip are slit longitudinally as at 19 so as to form tongues 2O and 2l.
In constructing the wall through the medium of the studding and fastening clipsA heretofore described the studdings A are arranged on a suitable foundation in spaced relation to each other. The board fastening clips are then applied through alining openings B and C. In applying these fastening clips the offset portion 1st thereof can readily pass through the upper portion of the openings B and C, and when said offset portion is disposed between the arms 1() and 11. Theends of the fastening clips are brought into registration with the reduced portions 12 and 13 of the openings B and C and passed into said reduced portions. In this manner the fastening clips are locked against longitudinal movement by engagement of the shoulders 15 and 16 with the inner faces of respective arms 10 and l1.
After the fastening clips have been applied in t-he various alining openings B and G the plaster boards E are arranged against the outer faces of the arms 10 and 1l so that the adjacent edges of said board are disposed relatively close to opposite sides of the slitted ends of the fastening clips when the tongues 2O and 2l of which said ends of the fastening clips are constituted, are bent in opposite directions across the outer faces of adjacent boards E and in this manner said boards are effectively secured to the studdings A.
What is claimed is;
In a wall structure, theeombination of a plurality of studdings each of which is U-shape in cross section and has its arms provided with alining openings, the lower lio portion of Which -latter are reduced in Width, Wall members having their adjacent ends disposed against the outer faces of the arms of the studdings, and Wall member fastening clips extending through alining openings in the arms of the studdin s and having their intermediate portions o set to form shoulders adapted to engage the inner face of the arms of the studdings when the terminals of said clips are @disposed in the Vreduced lower ends of alining openings, the
terminals of said clips being slit longitudinally to form tongues and t-he latter being bent in opposite directions over adjacent ends of the Wall members.
ln testimony whereof, We afIiX our signatures, in presence of two Witnesses. y
