TO ALLr WHOM IT' MAY CON CERN:
:Be it known that I, SAM'EL E. CONDON, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, and Statcof New York, have inventedanewfand useful' Improvement in Curling-Irons; and I do hereby declare that the following is a. full, clear, and exact/description thereof, which will enable others skilled in thear'ztuto make' and'u'sethe seme, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, forming part of this specification. I
The present-'invention relates to irons used for curling in the dressing of a persons hair, and consists in providing the case with a spring-catch, .fitting over. a ang'e upon the handle of the'i'ron, for securing it Within the case, as will be hereinafter more particularly described.. i i p l In curlingfirons as heretofore constructed,'tl1e case was not 'secured to` the iron, and was, therefore, constantly dropping off when in use, subjecting the operator to the dangerof'b'eing burned. In' the accompanying plate of drawings, my improvement in curling-irons Ais illustrated- Figure 1 being a side view to the case, brokeuout to show' the i1on',1and
Figure 2 a. transverse section, taken in the plane of the line :z: x, fig. 1.

A, in the drawings, represents' thecurling-iron, provided at one end with a suitable handle, B, for convenience in using it. C, a casing to iron, A, made ot' asutable size and slinpe'therefo'with one end, D, closed, and the other, E, open, and there provided with a splingcatch'pF, of suitable form to set over and engage with the flange, G, to the iron atits handle-end, and thus secure and hold the case upon the iron, Af
In the use ofthe iron, provided with a caserasY above described, the iron itself` is Hrstheated, 'as with ordinary curlingfirons, and-then inserted in the ense C, to whichJ imparting its heat it is used for the curling of thehair.
By means of' the case, a'smooth and eren surface is always secured forthe hair, as it is notthe surface of the iron itself' that is used, but that ofthe case thereto; and,a s the iron only `is inserted-in the fire, or subjected to the other heated medium used, no scaling to the case can possibly occur.- v
Although, in the present'descriptiomonly one form of curling-iron is shown, VI desire it'to be distinctlyV understood thaltI. do ,not intend to limit myself to any one particular shape thereof, as my inveuticumay be applied to all forms of such irons.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- The curling-iron 'when secured in the metal case C by means ofthe catch F uponthe case, fitting over the flange Gr upon the handle B, as herein shown and described;
The above specification of my invention signed by me, this thirteenth day'of August, 1867. 1
