'ro ALL wHoM IT MAY ooNoERN:
Be it known that I, JAMES M. WOOD, of Lowvillein the county oflewis, and State of New York, haveV inventeda new Improved Mode of }?reventing Accidents by Slipping or Falling Oli' from House-Roofs or Roofs of other Buildings, while engaged in shingling the same, thus rendering the walking or moving over roofs safe and secure to all persons wearing my improved shoel or boot for the purpose; and I do herebyv declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and letters of reference marked thereon, making part of this specification. t
The nature of my invention -consists in 4providing-the bottom surfaces of the soles and heels of boots or shoes with perforated plates of iron; vby punching holes in same, so as to produce a rasp or grater-like surface on one face of said iron plates, and by attaching the smooth faces of said plates incontact with the soles and heels of the boots or shoes, so that a rough exterior surface of a peculiar character is thus given to thoseparts of the boots or shoesrequired for standing on. The pecularity of said roughness results from the sharp, jagged, or burred rims given'to the perforations by the action of 'the punching.
The attachment of the plates soy formed is accomplished by any of the known methods resorted t'o` for securing taps and heelsto shoes or boots. In this instance, I place the bra-ss or iron plate A B (see drawing) at the toe of the shoe, as shown bythe drawing, and secure the same to the soles by the screws A B, in suchmanner as to cover a small strip of the sole-plate C D.V This covering, in addition to the screw C, secures completely the sole-plate C D to the shoe or boot-scie. A'lhe plate E is simply fixed, by the screw E, to the shoe or boot-heel. y i
Shoes or boots with the attachments described are intended to be used while engaged in shingling the roofs of houses or buildings, so as to enable the workman to have firm foot-hold, and to stand or move over said roofs v with comparative safety and security. The adhesion (so to spcaklirnparted by the wearer of such 'attachments `is proportionate to the pressure imparted, 'or as the weiglit'of the party using same; and it is` claimed that all tendency'to slip off or slide from even a very steep roofwill., with moderato caution, be altogether obviated by the use of this invention, l 0
It is further deemed to bean important and valuahle'invention when availed of in cases of fire, as, by the use of `ashoe or boot so protected, assistance can he extended with increased con'u'denceby theparties wearing the same, by proceeding directly to the roofs of such premises.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of lthe perforated plates A D E, when made in separate pieces,"and secured to the sole of thebcot or shoe, inthe manner and by the means herein described.
JAMES M. WOOD.
