INVENTOR 5W ORNEY ma -omns minus 00, PHO aLmw WAWINGTDN, u c.
UNITED STATES Patented September 8, 1903.
PATENT OFFICE.
ABE BASS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 738,146, dated September 8, 1903.
Application filed March 29,1902.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABE BASS, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Manhattan, in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Snow-Melting Machines,of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists, essentially, of three parts, the firstof which is a rotating rake by means of which the body of snow is partly broken up. The second part is a series of steam-jets through the instrumentality of which the snow is melted, and the third is a rotating broom or sweeper which serves to throw the melted snow or water to one side. I also employ means for self-propelling the machine, so that I have produced an automatic snow-melting machine, as aforesaid.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan View of my improved snow-melt ing machine. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a detail view.
In the drawings, 1 represents the frame of the vehicle, and 2 the rear wheels. The fore wheel, which operates as a steering-wheel, is shown at At 4 I show a boiler having suitable fire-box. (Not shown.) At 5 I show a coal-tender with place to accommodate the operator. The rear wheels 2 are the drivingwheels, and they are operated by means of beveled gear 6 7, the latter being mounted on rotating shaft 8, operated by any suitable steam-engine 9. The wheels 2 have an axle 10, having a small gear-wheel 11, which, through the intermediary gear-wheels 12 13 14, serve to rotate the rear revolving broom or sweeper 15.
There is nothing novel in the above-described parts, and I claim nothing therein eX- cept in so far as they cooperate with the other parts of my machine.
At 16 I show a rotating shaft having prongs Serial No. 100,524. (No model.
on their central shaft serve to agitate the snow, thereby exposing it the more effectually to the action of the steam-jets 24. These steam-jets extend outwardly between the prongs or fingers 17 and serve to discharge the steam upon the snow as it is mechanically stored up by the said pron-gs or fingers. The steam-jets are connected at their inner ends to the transverse pipe 25. This pipe receives steam from the boiler at through the pipe 26, the flow of the steam being controlled. by valve 27. I utilize the waste steam from the engines also by conducting same through pipes 28. These pipes connect with crosspipes 29. The transverse pipe 25 has a partially-rotating connection withthe pipes 29, the object being to admit the steam and also to permit the lifting of the steam-jets 24 by means of operating-handle 30.
I provide a handle 31 for shutting off or turning the steam from and to the propellingengine 9 and a pilot-handle 32 for steering the vehicle.
Having thus described my invention, the following is what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A vertically adjustable frame carrying means for discharging jets of steam, and r0- tating combers or rakes arranged intermediate of same, means for rotating said rakes and propelling the machine and a sweeper, all adapted to operate substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
ABE BASS.
Vitnesses:
HERBERT KNIGHT, HELEN BASS.
