RICHARD E. BRADSHAW, OF OKLAHOMA, OKLAHOMA.
STREET-CLEANING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 31, 1917.
Application filed July 13, 1915. Serial N 0. 39,639.
To all whom it may concern 1 Be it known that I, RICHARD E. BRAD- sHAw, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city, county, and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Street-Cleaning Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawlngs.
This invention relates to hand-operated street cleaning machines.
It isone aim of the invention to provide in a machine of this class, means for supporting the forward end of the machine for travel over the road surface in a manner to permit of the rotary sweeping brush acting upon the said surface regardless of any inequalities therein, the forward wheels being yieldably supported for this purpose.
Another aim of the invention is to provide in a machine of this class a receiving tray and a receiving platform upon which the sweepings are thrown from the brush, and also to provide means whereby the platform may be swung upwardly and rearwardly so as to deposit the sweepings into said tray.
The drawings show the machine.
Figure l is a side elevation of it, and
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof.
In both views similar characters of reference refer to similar parts.
Mounted upon ground wheels 3 and 4 is a framing 5, having bearings on shaft 6. This framing supports a body 7 having a partially opened front 8. Within this body is a rearwardly removable drawer 9, which is provided with a handle 10, and is held in place by a resilient latch 11, which is secured to the body 7 as at 12.
Just in front of the drawer 9, which is open at its front end 13, is a movably mounted deposit receiving platform 14, having a rear wall 15, and this platform is carried by arms 16, that are pivoted to the body as at 17. To this platform is pivoted, as at 18, a link 19, that is also pivoted, as at 20, to an elongated arm 21, by which to pull the platform upward and in the direction of the drawer 9, so that the accumulation on the platform may be thrown into the drawer. As the arm 21 swings in and out, when used, it will take into the hood 22, on top of the body 7.
Just in front of the structure above de scribed are wheels 23 and 24, mounted on shaft 25, which is carried on resiliently formed arms 26, which are carried out from the body 7. By this arrangement the inequalities of the roadbed is provided for when the device is in use.
At the forward free ends of the arms, 27, on each side of the "body 7, on which is mounted the shaft 6, are bearings 28, in
which are carried a shaft 29, carrying a rotary'brush 30. On this same shaft 29, is-
a gear 31, which is connected with a large gear 32 (carried on the shaft 6), by a sprocket chain 33.
The device is provided with a handle 34, which is braced as at 35. p s
Details of construction, such as stays 36, which involve no invention, are shown.
The modus opemmli is as follows.
The device is pushed forward by means 7 supported for travel, a receiving tray removably arranged within the rear end of the body, arms pivotally mounted within the body in advance of the tray, a receiving platform carried by thearms and extending within the body in advance of the said tray, a rotary brush located in advance of the platform, means for rotating the brush, an operating arm mounted for forward and rearward movement in the body and pro vided at its rear end with a handle portion, and a link pivoted to the said platform and to the forward end ofthe said operating arm whereby when the arm is moved rearwardly the platform will be swung to position to discharge the sweepings into the said tray.
Signed at Oklahoma city, county and lStitge of Oklahoma, this 9th day of July,
RICHARD BRADSHAW.
