Unrrnn @TA'IES BENJAMIN S. GORBY, OF SALEM, OHIO.
BOOK-LEAF HOLDER AND MARKER.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO. 726,675, dated April 28, 1903. Application filed June 5, 1902. Serial Not 110,305. (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN S. GOBBY, a'
citizen of the United States of America, residing at Salem, in the county of Oolumbiana and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book-Leaf Holders and Markers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in book-leaf holders and markers, and has for its object the provision of novel means whereby a book may be held in an open position at any desired page.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a device of the above-described character that may be adjusted to permit the device to be attached to any sized book; furthermore, one that will be readily attached and quickly removed when desired.
The invention further contemplates to construct a device of this character that will be extremely simple, strong, durable, comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, and highly efficient in its use.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, to be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout both views, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved book-holder, showing the same attached in position to a book. Fig. 2is an enlarged vertical longitudinal sectional view of my device.
In the drawings the reference-numeral 1 represents the book, and 2 3 represent hollow telescopic sections forming the body portion of the book-holder. In said hollow telescopic sections is secured a spiral spring 4, which is secured at one end, as shown at 5, to the telescopic section 2 and at the other end, as shown at 6, to the telescopic section 3. The said the hollow section 3 is likewise provided with hooked members 8 8,-which are formed integral therewith and are adapted to engage the back of the book or cover. A spreader 9, carrying wings 10, is secured to the hollow telescopic section 3, and a like spreader 11, carrying wings 12, is secured to the hollow telescopic section 2. These spreaders 9 10 serve to retain the leaves in proper position when the device is in use.
The operation of myimproved device is as follows: The book is opened at the desired page and the leaf-holder is inserted, as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the hook members 7 and 8 engaging the back of the book, and in order to obtain this position the telescopic section 2 or 3 is then drawn upwardly or downwardly, as the case may be, until the opposite hook members engage the lower or upper portion of' the book, when it will be retained in a position that will prevent the book from being closed.
The many advantages obtained by the use of my improved device will be readily apparent from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
It will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a book-holder, the combination of two hollow telescopic sections, a spring secured in said sections, and hook members secured on each end of said sections, substantially as described.
2. In a book-leaf holder and marker, the combination of two hollow telescopic sections, a spring secured in said sections, hook members formed integral with the free ends of said sections, and spreaders secured upon said sections, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
BENJ. S. GORBY.
