UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES A. TATUM, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO WHITALL TATUM COMPANY, OF YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
NIPPLE FOR NURSING-BOTTLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 712,157, dated October 28, 1902.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. TATUM, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and
. may lodge.
To this end my invention consists in theparticular construction hereinafter describedand claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved nipple. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation thereof on line 2 2 of Fig. 3, and Fig. 3 is a plan.
The improved nipple comprises an approximately cylindrical lower section A, provided with a reinforced edge or bead A at the bottom and with a slanting shoulder portion A at the top. This lower portion is adapted to' engage the neck and mouth of the nursingbottle, the shoulder resting on the edge of the bottle.
The upper portion of the nipple is frusto-. conical, as shown at A and terminates in a slightly-curved top A in which the central aperture A may be made. It is of course immaterial whether a central aperture or a series of apertures be provided.
The nipple may be made of soft rubber, as usual.
When this nipple is placed on a bottle, it will only be stretched laterally below the which inj urions matter may lodge.
Application filed April 5, 1902. Serial No. 101,464. (No model.)
shoulder A but not above it, thus giving it a firm grip on the bottle.
7 Onaecount of its being of reduced diameter at the top the nipple is readily'cleaned, since all the interior surfaces are readily accessible from the bottom, and there are no outwardlybulgiug portions between the bottom and the top of the nipple to form interior recesses in The nipplewill therefore beeasy to preserve in a serviceable condition, and there will be no danger of affecting the health of the infant by the injurious influence of foreign matter left in the nipple owing to imperfect or difficult cleaning.
What I claim as new,'and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
An elastic nipple for nursing-bottles, comprising an upper portion having a straight conical wall, the narrow portion of which is at the discharge end of the nipple, a shoulder or enlargment located at the wide end of said conical upper portion and adapted to become seated upon the mouth of the nursingbottle, and a substantially cylindrical lower portion, the interior diameter of which is substantially equal to the greatest inner diameter of said enlargement, said lower portion being adapted to embrace the neck of the bottle adjacent to the mouth thereof, and being provided at its free edge with a thickened portion was to give it a firm hold on the bottle at said free edge. v
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification. in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES A. TATUM.
