- JAW ATTACHMENT FOB VISES.
(Application filed June'zv, 1902.)
(No Model.)
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IVER CONRAD ISRAELSON, OF SISSITON, SOUTH DAKOTA.
JAW ATTACHMENT FOR VISES.
.$PECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 712,136, dated October 28, 1902.
Application filed June 27, 1902.
IE0 at] whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, IVER CONRAD ISRAEL- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sissiton, in the county of Roberts and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Jaw Attachments for Vises; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to jaw attachments for vises, and particularly to attachments suitable for welding together the share and landside of plows.
The object of the invention is to form a device which will weld said parts without hammering.
A further object is to form a device which can be attached to any ordinary smiths vise.
A further object is to form an attachment of the class described in which one of the jaws is so formed that it will adjust itself to fit any share.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of the jaw attachments. Fig. 2 is a section thereof on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a smiths vise with the attachments thereon. Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the plowshare and landside between the jaws, as in welding.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 6 in-' dicates the stationary jaw of the vise, and 6 the movable jaw thereof. A false jaw and supporting-plate is indicated at 7, and this is attached to the stationary jaw of the device by binding-screws 7. Pivoted to and upon this plate by a bolt 8 is a jaw 8, which engages the plowshare 9 to effect the swaging and welding action.
This jaw has a convex Serial No, 113,458. (No model.)
curvature from end to end of its engaging face and is beveled or inclined, as at 8", so that its upper edge overhangs the lower edge to take the form of the share against which it operates.
The movable jaw of the vise is provided with a false jaw 10, attached by means of binding-screws 10. This false jaw or plate 10 engages the landside of the plow, and it is provided with an extension 10, which rests on top of the movable jaw of the vise and serves to shield and protect the same from the heat of the weld, so as not to soften the vise.
In operation the share and landside rest upon the supporting-plate 7 on the stationary jaw of the vise, with the jaw 8 against the share. The movable jaw bearing the jawplate 10 is then brought against the landside with force, and'the share and landside are squeezed and welded together without the necessity for any hammering. The jaw 8 will turn on its pivot to take the shape of any ordinary'share, and it is immaterial Whether the landside and share fit before welding, as the jaws draw them together perfectly and shape'and weld the same.
By the use of this device a share and landside may be welded in two heats, and an important advantage of the improvement is that the attachment is simple and inexpensive and may be applied to any smiths vise.
What I claim is- A jaw attachment for Vises comprising a work-supporting plate attached to one of the jaws of the vise, and .the clamping-jaw pivoted upon the plate and having a convex beveled face, as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
IVER CONRAD ISRAELSON.
