I T all whom it'may concern:
Be it known that 1, DAVID E. ROWLAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specification, and to the numerals and figures of reference marked thereon, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of all of the parts of the wrench properly connected. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the detachable toothed-block removed. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the wrench, showing the toothed-bar removed. Fig. 4 is a section of {)he wrench-head and detachable toothed- The present invention has relation to wrenches commonly known as alligator jaw wrenches, and it consists in the novel arrangement hereinafter described and particularly pointed outin the claims.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawing.
In the accompanying drawing, 1'. represents the handle, which may be of the form shown, or it may be of any other desired form. The handle 1 is provided with the head 2, which head is provided with the jaws 3 and 4, which jaws are arrangedsubstantially as shown and as shown they form a V shaped opening. The jaw 4 is rovided with the socket 5 in which socket t e toothed-bar 6 is inserted or placed as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 4. The outer end of the socket 5 is bounded by the inclined flange or shoulder 7, which inclined shoulder is for the purpose hereinafter described. The outer end of the toothed bar 6 is beveled, the inclination of the bevel corresponding with the inclination of the shoulder 7 and is so beveled for the purpose of providin a means for setting a portion of the tooth ar 6 under the inclined shoulder 7 as illustrated in Fig. 4, for the pur pose hereinafter described.
Through the head 2 or just at the rear of the jaw 3 is located the screw 8, which screw is so located that its inner end will reach or be extended beyond the inner face of the jaw 3, near the junction of said jaw with the jaw 4. The inner end of the screw 8 is preferably beveled and is so beveled for the purpose of providing'suitablecontact between the end of said screw and the'inner beveled end of the toothed-bar 6.
A further object and purpose of beveling the end of the screw 8 and locating the screw at an angle to the toothed bar 6 is to provide a double wedge action upon said toothed bar; that is to say as the screw is moved toward the bar, the beveled end of the screw comes in contact with the beveled end of thetoothed bar and forces the toothed bar endwise not only by the contact, but by a longitudinal movement of the screw as it moves down or upon the inclined end of said bar so that when the bar has been roperly clamped between the inclined shou der at the outer end of the socket and the beveled end of the screw, the back of the bar at the extreme beveled end will come under the beveled end of the screw thereby seating the cone end of the screw against the beveled end of the toothed bar, thereby preventing any relative movement as between the jaw and the toothed bar and the crowding of the toothed bar is at an angle to a longitudinal line with reference to the screw, so that the screw forms a double purpose, first to crowd the toothed bar endwise and second to set the beveled end of the screw in full contact with the beveled end of the toothed bar. The screw 8 is for the purpose of holding the toothed bar 6 in proper relationship with reference to the jaw 4, and at the same time locking said toothed-bar in the socket 5.
It will be understood that when the screw 8 is withdrawn so as to bring its inner end away from the toothed-bar 6 said toothedbar can be lifted from its socket by an upward and rear or longitudinal movement, thereby freeing the outer end of the toothed bar 6 from under the inclined flange or shoulder 7, after which said toothed bar can be removed. It is well understood that in wrenches of this kind that the teeth formed upon the toothed bar 6 will become worn from continued and long use and when the teeth are formed integral with the jaw or jaws of a Wrench of, the alligator type, said teeth must be shar ened or the wrench as an entirety must be t rown away; but by proforced against the inner beveled end of the toothed bar said toothed bar will be crowded endwise and held in a firm position so that there can be no relative movement as between the toothed bar and the jaw. The toothed-bar 6 should be formed of such a size that its toothed face will be extended beyond the face of the jaw 4 so that the bar can be set upon the pipe or nut designed to be operated upon. in the drawings I haveshown the op osite jaw from that to which the toothed bar is attached formed plain, owing to th fact that it is not of importance or necessary to form teeth upon the jaw op 0- site the toothed bar, owing 'to the fact t at the toothed bar will prevent any slipping or sliding as between sald toothed-bar and pipe or wrench upon which said toothed bar .is
applied.
It will be understood that by forming'the jaws as shown said jaws-will be in position to properly grip nuts of different sizes by reason of the angularity of said jaws with reference to each other.
Having fully described-my invention what I claim as new anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As an improved article of manufacture, a wrench of the-class described,consisting of a handle and a wrench-head, integral jaws extended from said head and located at an angle to each other, oneof said jaws provided with a socket having a width less than the Width of the jaw, said socket provided beveled-end of the toothe with an inclined shoulder at its outer end, a detachable tooth bar formed of a width to correspond with the width of the socket and rovi ed with beveled ends, said toothed bar ocated in the socket and a screw located at an obtuse angle to the toothed bar and said screw adapted to bear against the inner beveled end of the detachable toothed bar, sub stantially as and for the purpose specified.

As an improvedartlcle'of manufacture, a wrench of the alligator type-consisting of a handleand-a wrench-head, jaws locatedat an angle to each other, one ofthe aws provided with .a socket, said socket bounded at its outer end by an inclined ledge, a detachable toothed bar adapted tobelocated in the socket and rovided with beveled ends, one of the beveled endsadapted to be seated under the inclined ledge, a screw locatedin the wrench- -headand at an obtuse angle to the detachable toothed bar and said screw provided with an inner beveled end corres onding with the d baradjacent the screw,.said beveledend of the screw adapted to abut against the inner end ofthe toothed bar, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
