Description

B. 0. NAGEL.
ADJUSTABLE socxm' WRENCH.
APPLICATION FILED NOV. 19. 1907. I
-. I Patented Oct. 18, 1908.
. M7ZIIWENT0R waTw-ssga I W EZWMW UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
To all whom it may concern: K
Be it known that I, Earn. 0. NAGEL, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Socketrenches,
.- of which the following is 'aspecification.
Myinvention relates to improvements in an adjustable, socket wrench in which setscrews, nuts, bolt heads etc.,, of diiferent sizes may be tightened or loosened up as the case may be; and the objects of my improvements are, first, to provide a suitable and durable socket wrench; second, to afford facilities for the pro. er adjustment of the reins to suit the WHIOHS SlZBS'Of nuts, capscrews, bolt head etc., as is 'met with in practice within the range of the wrench; third, to make the wrenchcompact as possible as wrenches of this class should be. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which U a 7 Figure 1. is a complete view of the wrench ready for use on. large nuts, capscrews etc. Fig. 2 is another view of the lower part of Fig. 1. showing the reins of the wrench closed and ready for use on smaller work-than isshown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3. shows a planor end view of the socket end-of the wrench, illustrating the shape or form ,ofthe socket for hexagon nuts etc. Fig. 4. is a view-of the open link removed from the reins of Fig. 1.
Similar figures refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The wrench is to be drop, or machine forged from steel the principal forging consisting of the lower part of'the wrench see Figs; '1, 2. -5 being the shank of the wrench while 7 are the reins. In Fig. 1. the reins are shown open this being thenormal posi- Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 19, 1907. Serial No. 402,933.

tion of thereins while in'Fig. 2. the reins are shown closed, being held so by the reinforcing collar 12 and thumb screw 13. It will be observed that this set collar 12 serves the double purpose of reinforcing the reins 7, Fig. 2. when the WrenclLis used on small work, and also when the wrench is used on larger work this set collar 12 is slipped up the reins 7, to the position shown in Fig. 1. thereby reinforcing the reins at their apex.
When the wrench is used on larger work an- I am aware that prior to my invention adjustable socket wrenches have been made with pivoted reins. I therefore do not claim such a combination broadly; but- I claim':
1. A wrench having spring jaws at its end provided with work engaging sockets combined with an open link and a reinforcing collar adapted'to compress or lock said jaws as set forth.
2. A wrench having spring jaws at its rovided with work engaging sockets combined with an open link anda reinforc- I ing collar with set screw therefor adapted to compress or look said jaws asset forth.
- EMIL o. NAGEL.
