Description

(No Model.) 4 H. O. HART.
ADJUSTABLE OULTIVATOR sHOVBL;
No. 396,277. Patented Jan; 15, 1889.-
WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT @rrrcn.
HENRY C. HART, OF WANNAKEE, ASSIGNOR TO THE FULLER & JOHNSON MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF MADISON, IVISCONSIN.
ADJUSTABLE CULTIVATOR.SHOVEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 396,277, dated January 15, 1889.
Serial No. 286,970- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY C. HART, a resident of IVannakee, in the county of Dane and State of Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Cultivator-Shovels; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a tilting device for cultivator-shevels.
The object is to produce a cultivatorshovel which shall be of such construction that it may be tilted to any desired angle relative to the plow-beam; furthermore, to produce a tilting device which shall be simple of construct-ion, efficient and durable in use, and comparatively inexpensive of production.
\Vith these objects in view the invention consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of a cultivator-shovel tilting device, as will be hereinafter fully described in the specification, illustrated in the drawings, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the tilting device detached from the shovel. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the same attached to the shovel, and Fig. 3 is a detail view of the base of the tilting device.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the shovel, which is of the ordinary construction and made of the material ordinarily used for such purposes.
B designates the tilting device, constructed of a bottom or base, 1, the under portion of which is beveled 011 each side, so as to conform to the shape of the shovel. 011 each side of this base is formed an ear, 2, provided with an opening, 3, through which the bolts 4 of the shovel pass, and by means of which it is secured firmly in place upon the same.
0 designates the cultivator-standard, constructed, preferably, of iron, and has secured at its lower end, or has formed integral therewith, two studs, 5, designed to fit in two grooves, 6, formed on the under side of the base, these studs, in. conjunction with the grooves in the base, forming the pivotal point of the cultivator-standard. At a point near the said studs and sliding on the said beam is a yoke, 7, to the lower end of which is pivoted, by means of a bolt, 8, a clip, 9, the lower end, 10, of which engages two grooves, 11, in the base similar to those at the other end of the same, that are engaged by the studs on the cultivator-standard.
Having now described the various parts of this device, I will proceed to show its method of operation.
The base, with the studs of the cultivatorstandard engaging the grooves 011 the under side of the same and the clip engaging the grooves at the opposite end, is placed upon the shovel and is securely clamped in place thereon by means of the bolts and nuts be fore referred to. Now, should the cultivatorstandard be set at an angle of, say, fifteen degrees, and it should be necessary to set it at an angle of twenty degrees, it will only be necessary to loosen the nuts on the bolts 4, move the cultivator-standard up, and then screw the nuts on the bolts 4 home again,
when the beam will be held firmly and rigidly combination of the shovel, a grooved base adjustably secured thereto, a standard, and studs secured to the said standard for engaging the grooves in the base, substantially as described.
2. In an adjustable cultivator-shovel, the combination of the standard, a base adj ustably secured thereto and provided at its for- Ward and rear ends with transverse grooves, In testimony that i claim the foregoing as a standard, and studs secured to the stand my own I have hereunto affixed my signature ard for engaging the forward transverse in presence of two witnesses.
grooves, ayoke fitting on the standard, and HENRY O. HART. 5 a clip pivoted to the yoke and engagil'lg the Vitnesses:
rear transverse grooves of the base, snbstan- A. E. PROUDFIT,
tially as and for the purpose specified. J. H. NICHOLS.
