Indiana, have invented certain new and use` ful Improvements in Oaskets;.and I do de-v clare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- `act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The invention relates to caskets.

The object of the invention is to provide a casket which shall be simple of construction, durable in use, comparatively inexpensive of production, odor-proof and germ-proof, and indestructible by moisture.

With these land other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a perspective view of my improved casket. Fig. 2 is alongitudinal vertical sectional view. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view; and Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional View through a portion of the casket, showing'the manner of attaching the fasteners thereto.

Referring to the drawings, l denotes the body of the casket, and 2 the lid, preferablyl made of glass, porcelain, or material possessing the indestructible qualities of either.

The body of the casket is provided at its upper edge with an integral surrounding molding 4: and at. its lower edge with a similar molding 5, between lwhich is formed integral brace-posts 6, having vertical dovetail slots 7, which lead out throughthe lower molding. In these slots are adapted to be inserted from below soft-metal bars 8, preferably of lead, which will permit of said bars being forced upwardly into place and yielding to overcome any slight irregularities in molding, so that in the insertion of said bars there will be no danger of ksnapping or `breaking the casket. The upper ends of the grooves, it will be noticed, are closed by the upper molding, so that when the casket is supported by the handles 9, which` are adapted to be attached to the lmetal bars by screws or other fastening devices'lO, said bars will be prevented from withdrawing from the grooves. The inner wall of the casket at its upper edge is beveled, as is also the edge ot the lid,-.which latter, in order to decrease the surface of contact,

is provided with a beveled'rib lll, which forms a continuation of the beveled edge. The beveled edge of the lid, its rib, and the beveled wall of the casket are ground similar to the manner of grinding the interior wall of glass bottle-necks and glass Stoppers to insure a tight joint or hermetic seal, and, if desired, at the joint of the lid with the casket-body I Amay augment the hermetic sealing eectiveness by the application" of solder.

l5 denotes fastening means for fastening the lid in place. These means preferably consist of turn-buttons pivoted to headedstuds l6,preferablyin the form of screws, which are embedded in -solder 17, laid into integral lugs 1S, formed along the outer side of the casketbody.

If desired, I may provide the lid with handles'for removing thesame. These handles are preferably cast integral with the top of the cover.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, mode of operation, and advantages of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.

Various changes in the form, proportion, and details of construction may be made withinthe scope of the invention without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
