BURIAL CASE R VAULT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 23, 1909.
Application filed March 14, 1908, Serial No. 421,123. Ilenewed February 9, 1909. Serial No. 477,017.
To all/whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ALBERT M. McCon- MioK and WILLiAM W. Karolina, citizens of the United States of America, residing at toltlmbiana, in the county of Columliiaiui. and State of Ohio, have invented eertain new and useful improvements in Burial Cases or Vaults, of which the following is a. s )eeilieation, rel'erenee being bad therein to the accompanying drawing This inventiolrrelates to a burial ease or vault, and the primary object of our invention is, to provide a nietallie casing or vault which when one-e closed cannot be easily burglarized or opened.
A furlher object of our invention is to provide a strong and durable burial ease that. son he hermetically sealed.
A still further object of our invention is to provide a two part burial case 6r vault hav mg a novel spring look that cannot be tampared with after the parts of the case have been assembled or placed together.
With the above and other objects in view,
whi h will more rcmiily appear as the inven-.
tion is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be presently described and then specil'ically pointed out in the appended claim.
in the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of our burial vault or case. Fig. 2 is a cross scetional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the case or vault, and l ig. 4- is a plan of the bottom part'ol' the casing or vault.
'lo putour invention into practice, we provide a-base plate or bottom 1 with side llang'cs and end llaiu es Z, and with longitudinal resilient lodhing plates .i, these plates being riveted or otherwise secured, as at 4 adjacent to the side llangcs ol the base plate or bottom 1. 'ihese locking plates 3 are n'ovidcd with oienings :3, to receive beve ed lugs (icarried by the inner lower side edges of airoblong hood or casing 7. The hood and casing T is'l'ormcd with a rounded top and rounded ends and is made of light sheet metal. v
The base plate or bottom 1 is provided with angle bars S contiguous to the end llaugcs thereof, these bars, together with the looking plates 3 guidin the hood or easing 7 into position when p aeed upon the base plate or bottom 1. As the hood or easing 7 is forced downwardly upon the locking plates 3, these plates are forced inwardly by the beveled lugs 6 until the openings are reached, at which time the looking plates 3 assume their normal position and prevent the hood or easing 7 from being removed.
When it is desired to hermetically seal the burial ease, cement or similar material can be poured in between the flanges 2 and the lower edges of the hood or easing 7.
From the foregoing description, it is apparent that we have devised a vermin proof and water proof burial easing, that cannot be surreptitimisly opened.
The locking plates 3 are of a length suflicient to have their ends in juxtaposition to the end bars 5, and both the end.bars 8 and the locking plates 3 being in the form of angle-bars, it will be observed that the base llanges ot' the plates 3 and the end bars 8 form a support for a casket or co'llin )laced in the vault. 'lhe upright flange oi each locking plate 3 is made considerably wider than the biise flange of said plates and the free edge thereof is turned inwardly as shown in Figs. 2, .3 and 4 so that the lugs 6 will clear the upper edges being placed in position The end bars 8 are so placed on the bottom 1 that their upright llungcs are spaeed away from the inner face of the end thing-es 2, a distance substantially or ual lo the thickness of the metalfrom which" t 1e hood 7 is formed so that the latter fits neatly between the end bars and the end walls 2 carried by the bottom,
Having now described our invention What we claim as new, is;-
A burial case or vault formed from sheet metal and comprising a base or bottom section and a hood section, the base section embodying a bottom having an upwardly-a lending llange at its ends and side edges, locking-plates of angle-bar form secured on said bottom having the npwardly-cxteiuling flanges thereof of greater width than the base flanges and provided with inwardly-turned upper edges, a bar of angular lorni secured to said bottom and having their upright llanges of these plates as hood 7 is spaced from the upwardly-extendiug llange of the bottom a less distance than the upright flanges of the locking plates are spaced from said bottom flanges, a hood havin its edges received within the flange of said TJOIL- 5 tom, and lugs carried by said hood to engage in the openings provided therefor in the upright flanges of said locking-plates.
In testimony whereof we ufIix our sigmatures in the presence of two witnesses.
