BURIAL VAULT.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patqgnted Ju ie 27, 1922,
Application filed February 26, 1921. Serial No. 447,993.
To all whom it may concern 7 Be it known that I, GEORGE W. 'KILLI'NGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Joliet, in the county of Will and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Burial Vaults, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to burial vaults which are" constructed of concreteo-r analo-.
gous plastic material, and its object is to provide a very strong and durable structure of this kind, and also one which can be easily and cheaply produced.
The object stated is attained by means of I a novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed, and in order that'the same may be better understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the vault; Fig. 2 is a cross section thereof; Fig.
3 is a longitudinal section; Fig. d is an enlarged sectional detail of a corner, and Figs. 5 to 7 are enlarged detail sectional views showing different forms of joints between the vault andits lid.
Referring specifically to the drawing the vault is composed of an inner metal box 10 which is covered on the outside with concrete or other plastic material. The boxis open at the top, and the concrete material completely covers the sides, the ends and the bottom of the box, so that it forms the side walls 11, the end walls 12, and the bottom '13 of the vault.
Before the concrete covering is applied to the box 10, there is placed on outer surface thereof a wire netting or other open-mesh fabric 1 1 which completely covers said surface and is soldered or otherwise rigidly secured thereto. The concrete or cement is then applied to produce the side walls 11, the
\ end walls 12 and the bottom 13 of the vault,
the box 10.
these walls being given thickness to produce a massive structure. The wire netting 14 serves to make theconcrete or other plastic material adhere perfectly to the surface of The vault is provided with ailid composed of a bottom sheet metal plate 15 covered with.
plastic material 16. A wire netting 17 for the same purpose as the netting 14 is also provided. The lid is arched and where it seats on the top edges of the vault side and end walls 11 and 12, it has a dependingv flange 18 seating in a rabbet 19 in the edges of said, walls. The joint ma be sealed with cement-to exclude water an .moisture from the interior of the vault. Y
Figs. 5, Sand 7 show slight variations in the shape of the sealing flanges of the lid,
the flange 20 in Fig. 5 being round, and the. flange 21 in Fig. 6 being pointed.
Fig. 7 shows another modified lid structure. Here the bottom of the lidjis shaped so that only its marginal portion seats on the top edges of the vault, and in said edges, in'- wardly ofthe point where they are engaged by the lid,.they are provided with acontinuous V-shaped groove 22. The lid is arched and the metallic bottom plate 15 has an integral inturned flange 23 which is pro' vided at its free end with a downward V- shaped bend 24 to seat in the groove 22,- in
which latter it is tightly wedged by its groove 22 to guard against possible entrance vault outside the groove, and 'said flange having at its free end a down turned V- shaped bend-seating in the groove.
2. The combination with a burial vault having a V-shaped groove in its'top. edge;
of a lid composed of a metallic plate and a plastic material covering the same externally, said plate having an inturnedmarginal flange seating on the aforesaid edge of the vault outside the groove, and said'flange having at its free end a down turned V- Tshaped bend. sea ng in the gr o the ee i end of the bend projecting upvvardly to terminate above the top of the groove.
3a The combination with a burial vault having a V-shaped groove in its top edge; of ,5 a lid composed of a metallic plate and a plastic material covering the same externally, said plate having an inturned mar ginal flange seating on the aforesaid edge of the vault outside the groove, and said flange having at its free end. a; down turned V- 10 shaped bend seating in the groove, said bend being resilient to Wedge in the groove.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
GEORGE W. KILLINGER.
