CHARLES H. LELAND AND HERBERT S. WEBBER, 0F EOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
' PLURAIPeRYPT STRUCTURE.
To all whom, t may concern Be it known that we, CHARLES H. LELAND and HERBERT S. VEBBER, both citizens of the United States of America, both residing at Los Angeles, county of Los Angeles, State of California, have invented a certain new and useful Plural-Crypt Structure; and We do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will .enable others skilled -in the art to which it appertains to make and' use the same.
This invention relates to plural crypt structure, and it may be Said to consist in the provision of the novel andv advantageous features and in the novel and limproved construction, arrangement and combination of parts and materials as will be apparent from the description and claim which follow here* inafter.
One object of the invention is to provide .a novel and improved plural crypt structure which is well adapted for use for burial purposes and which when so used meets in a high degree the sanitary requirements necessary to safeguard the health and comfort of l the public against bacterial infection or noisome odor consequent. upon decomposition of bodies disposed in the crypts.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved plural crypt structure in which each of the crypts is sanitary and self-contained and in which provision is made for the separate sanitation of each of the crypts.
Further objects of the invention ar-e to provide a novel and improved plural crypt structure which is simple and economical in construction, strong and durable, provided with novel and effective draining means and ventilating means, in which a bed of air drying and disinfecting material is provided in each of the crypts, in which the crypts are sealed in ai convenient and effective manner, in which the unused cryptsl are completely shut off from the used crypts, and in which anels at the front of the crypts effective manner.
Other objects and the advantages o-f the 1nvention willbe apparent to those skilled in the art from a consideration of the following description .of the preferred form of the plural specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 13, 1913.
Patented Apr. 21, 1914. Serial N o. 795,025.
crypt structure, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a broken longitudinal sectional View of a tier of crypts arranged within a mausoleum I and having the invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is an enlarged broken front elevational view taken on the line 2 2' of Fig. l; F ign?) is an enlarged broken sectional view taken on the line 3-.-3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is an enlarged broken sectional view taken on the line 1*1 of Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is an enlarged broken and sectional view of adjacent tiers of crypts taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. l; Fig. 6is an enlarged broken. sectional view taken on the line 6 6 of Fig. 1 Fig. 7 is an enlarged broken sectional view taken onthe line'7-7 of Fig. G; Fig. 8 is a fragmentary view of oppositelyv disposed crypts showing plugs in the airinlet openings; and Fig. 9 is la fragmentary view showingthe tenon at the end of the front cover'for the crypt.
The crypts 10, of concrete or other suitable material, areformed in a tier or preferably .a plurality of contiguous tiers and they are .preferably arranged lwithin' a suitable mausoleum 11 having air inlets 12 at the bottom thereof and air outlets 13 at the top thereof. The bottoms of the crypts 10 slope downwardly from front to rear and have thereon a plurality of spaced stand ards 14 on which may be disposed galvanized screens l5 on which burial casketsmay rest; suitable air drying material 16 being disposed on the bottoms of the crypts between the standards 14.4 .4
At the rear of the'tiers of crypts 10 are arranged drain pipes 17 which lead to closed cisterns 18 which may have disinfecting ma` terial therein and which are preferably placed below the surface of the ground 19 under the tiers of crypts. Branch pipes 20 are connected to the drain pipes 17 and pass through the rear walls of the Vcrypts and terminate at the rear of the bottom of the crypts. To prevent communication between used and unused crypts, caps 21 are'screwed on the branch pipes 20 of the crypts not in use and they are removed when such crypts are tobe used. 'A subsoil drain 22 may be arranged under the mausoleum 11.
Air passageways 23 leading` from below to the topnf the tiers of crypts are formed sagcways 24 and 25 in open communication With the passageways 23 to ventilate such crypt.
At the front thereof each of the crypts l is formed with a rectangular recess l2T adapted to receive the edge portions of a head or cover 28`and of a marble panel 29 which is disposed against the outer face of by means of cement or other suitable luting' the head 2S. The head 28 has at the sides thereof tenons 30 Which are adapted to fit in corresponding mortises in the front end portion of the crypt. When the crypt is to be used the'hcad 28 may be sealed in place substance.
As seen more clearly in Fig. 2, the marble panels 29 are removably held in place by means of marble slabs 31 Which are adapted to cover the edge portions of the panels 29 on adjoining crypts and have the end portions thereof beveled to tit closely together so that they may be held in place by means of screws 32 which have heads 33 thereof in engagement With the ends of the slabs 3l and pass into expanding sockets 34E disposed in diverging recesses 35 formed in the front portion of the crypts.
From the foregoing descriptionit will be paratively simple in design and construction and that it is well adaped to carry out the objects of the invention.
thile one form of construction embodying the invention has been particularly illustrated and described, many changes and modifications thereof will occur 'to those skilled in the art-Wherefore the riGht is reserved to all such changes and modifications as do;not depart from the spirit and pended claim.
' We claim The herein-described plural crypt structure, comprising a tier oi crypts open atthe front end thereof and each having air inlet and outlet passageways, said crypts each having the bottom thereof sloping downwardly from front to rear and provided with a plurality of standards and air drying material disposed between the Estandards, screens on the standards, removable plugs in said passageways, and means for closing the front end of the crypts.
In testimony whereof, we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses at Los Angeles, county of Los Angeles, State of California. this 6th day of October A. D. 1913.
