UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALTAI G. SMITH, OFCHEYENNE, WYOMING.
HAIR-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters latent'No. 698,333, dated April 22, 1902.
Application filed October 20, 1900. fi'erial No. 33,720. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALTAI G. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cheyenne, in the county-of Laramie andState of Wyoming, have invented a new and Improved Hair-Pin, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description This invention relates to a hair-pin provided with means for fasteningit securely in thehair, thus to prevent the loss of the pin.
This specification is the disclosure of one form of the invention, while the claim defines the actual scope thereof.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,
in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
Figure 1 is a view showing the invention in use, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view of the device The pin has a tubular circular head or body part a, from which project two prongs b Within the tubular head a is arranged an arc-shaped bolt 0', adapted to project across between the heels of the prongs b and to have its free end engaged in a slight recess b in one of the prongs, so that when the bolt is in the position shown in Fig. 2' it passes under a lock of hair, thereby holding the pin securely in place;
The bolt c is provided'with a thumb-piece c for facilitatin g its manipulation, the thumbpiece passing through the slot at in the head a. An expansive spiral spring 11 is situated in one end of the hollow head a and presses against the bolt 0, so as to hold it firmly in the position shown in Fig. 2.
To place the pin in position, the bolt '0 held firmly in the hair and its accidental displacement rendered impossible.
As shown in the drawings, one end of the slot in the tubular head terminates ata point midway between the ends of the head, so that the thumb or finger piece 0' when the bolt is 5:
in the locked position is at the uppericentral portion of the hair-pin and projects above the hair, forming an ornament for the pin. Owing to this position of the finger or thumb piece a it is always accessible and can be readily manipulated without disarranging the hair. I
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentr A hair-pin comprising a curved tubular head having its ends extending inward to+ ward each other, and solid prongs projecting from the ends of the head, the head opening at the heel of one of said prongs and closed 6 g at the other'end, a curved bolt mounted in the head'and adapted to project through said opening and extend across the space between the heels of the prongs and to engage a recess in the heel of the other prong, the said 70 bolt being adapted to engage a lock of the hair to hold the pin in place, a coil-springarranged in the closed end of the head and pressing against the inner end of the bolt, to hold it in the locked position, and a thumb- 7Q piece connected with the bolt to move the latter against the tension of the spring, the said thumb-piece extending through a slot in the top of the head and being approximately. midway between the ends of the head when 86 the bolt is in the locked position.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALTAI G. SMITH,
Witnesses:
O. T. SAoxn'r'r, R. W. BREoKoNs.
