Patented Mar. 10, *1953 UNITED:l STATES PATENT OFFICE 2,630,811I NoNsKID BARRETTE Irvin Ti Greem-Jr., Roxbury; Conn.'A
Application May 17, 1951;.SerialNor226'85 1 claim. (c1. 13a-48) This invention relates to ladies and childrens hair clasps and is particularly directed toy barrette of the above nature. having a clasptongue which is cooperative with a holding bar portion. of the barrette to rmly maintain the barrette in clasped position in the hair..
Another object is to provide a device of the character described which may be made inexpensively of plastic material or metal.
A further object is to provide a device of the above nature which will be simple in construction. easy to apply and manipulate, compact, ornamental in appearance, and very efficient and durable in use.
With these and other objects in view there have been illustrated on the accompanying drawing four forms in which the invention may conveniently be embodied in practice.
In the drawing:
Fig. l represents a bottom view of one form of the improved barrette.
Fig. 2 is a side View of the same.
Fig. 3 is a bottom view of a second form of the improved barrette.
Fig. 4 is a side view of the same.
Fig. 5 is a bottom view of a third form of the improved barrette.
Fig. 6 is a bottom view o f a fourth form of the improved barrette.
Fig. '7 is a cross-sectional view of the third form of the improved barrette taken along the line 'I-l of Fig. 5 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Fig. 8 represents a cross-sectional view of the fourth form of the improved barrette taken along the line 8-8 of Fig. 6.
Referring now to the drawing, in which like reference numerals denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral I indicates generally the rst form of the invention. the same comprising an elongated rectangular back II, which may be slightly curved as clearly shown in Fig. 2, and which is provided at one end with an upwardly extending hinge block I2, and at its other end with an upwardly extending catch block I3. Provision is also made of an upwardly projecting longitudinally disposed friction means portion I4 thereinbetween. and an elongated loop, concave, spring wire clasp tongue I pivotally located at one end within said hinge block I2. The tongue I5 is made with a smaller radius of curvature than the back 2. II4 in order to. produce a moreU positivesfllV` 1115,01! the hair enclosed by. the barrette. The frictir'il means portion I4 of the barrette I0"comprise's a plurality of frusto pyramidal projections I6 which provide al frictional hair engaging upper' surface havingarsnubbi`ng action. l
Thefclasp tongue I5' isfprovided. at 'its hinged" end witlfr anl interconnecting. Wirecli'p lo'pIT which serves to hold-'the inwardly extendingfends" IB', I9 of said tongue securely within the hinge block I2. In order that the clasp tongue I5 may snap firmly in place on the catch block I3, the latter is undercut at its sides as indicated at 20.
The second form of the invention, illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4, and designated generally by the numeral 2|, is similar to the first form except that its friction means portion 22 comprises a plurality of upstanding, hemispherically-domed cylindrical knobs 23.
The third form of the invention, illustrated in Figs. 5 and '7 and designated generally by the numeral 24, is similar to the first and second forms except that the friction holding means portion comprises a central longitudinal rectangular rib projection 25, and a pair of opposed longitudinal rectangular side rib projections 2,6, 21, so spaced as to form recesses 28, 29 within which the side arms 30, 3I of the clasp tongue 32 will lie, when the barrette is in clasped condition (see Fig. 7).
The fourth form of the invention, illustrated in Figs. 6 and 8, and designated generally by the numeral 33, differs from the other forms in that its clasp tongue 34 is double-bent at its hinged end so as to form a pair of inclined shoulders 35, 36 which converge and abut one another as at 31. The friction holding means in this form of the invention comprises a pair of spaced longitudinal rectangular rib projections 3B, 39 having their inner ends 40, 4I so located as to be engaged by the inclined shoulders 35, 36 respectively when the clasp tongue 34 is closed. It will thus be evident that the clasp tongue 34 will be constrained against accidental disassembly from the hinge block 42. If desired, an interconnecting wire clip may embrace said shoulders to hold the inner ends of said tongue together, as in the other forms of the invention.
vOpemzttion.
In the operation of each form of the barrette herein disclosed the tongue clasp will press the lock of hair sinuously over the respective projections comprising the friction means portion of the barrette, and against the back of 3 the underside of said barrette, thereby rmly gripping and snubbing the hair.
One advantage of the improved barrette is that it will stay securely locked in position without sliding off of the lock of hair embraced thereby.
While there have been disclosed in this specification four forms in which the invention may conveniently be embodied, it is to be understood that these forms are shown for the purpose of illustration only and that the invention is not to be limited to the specific disclosures but may bemodied and embodied in various other forms without departing from its spirit. In short, the invention includes all the modications and embodiments coming within the scope of the following claim.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new, and for which it is desired to secure Letters Patent is:
In a barrette, the combination comprising an elongated, substantially rectangular back portion, a generally rectangular hinge block integral with and projecting from the under-surface of said back portion near one end thereof, a catch block integral with and projecting from the under-surface of 'said back portion near the other end thereof, an elongated wire loop clasp tongue having its ends inturned and pivotally journaled in openings in said hinge block so as to be swingable coextensively with respect to said back portion, the closed end portion of said clasp tongue being operable to resiliently straddle the longitudinal sides of said catch block, the longitudinal sides of which are undercut, whereby said clasp tongue will be detachably retained in clasped position, and friction means integral with and projecting from the under-surface of said back portion intermediate said hinge block and said catch block, said friction means comprising a plurality of parallel rows of upstanding staggered hemispherically-domed cylindrical studs within which the hair is caused to lie in sinuous lines, whereby said barrette will be rmly secured in clasped position on the wearers head.
