Description
Patented Mar. 3, 111953 Robert Bhrer, Freuenfeld, Switzerland, assignor to Julius Mader, Saint Gallen, Switzerland Application July 30, 1947, Serial No. 764,803 In Switzerland March 14, 1946 Section 1, Public Law 690, August 8, 1946 Patent expires March 14, 1966 2 Claims.
The invention relates generally to combs and more particularly to a comb consisting of two parts provided with teeth and with a cleaning element lying rearwardly of the base of the comb teeth to receive impurities when using the comb.
The novelty of this comb consists in that the aforesaid two parts are hinged to each other and that between the parts spring-acting members are provided for the purpose of pressing the teeth of the two parts of the comb toward each other and holding firmly the aforesaid cleaning element for receiving deposited impurities.
Two examples of execution of the invention are illustrated in the drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a side view of a part of a comb made according to the invention,
Fig. 2 a plan view of the comb of Fig. l,
Fig. 3 a section taken on the line 3-3 in Fig. 1,
Fig. 4 a section taken on the line 4-4 in Fig. 1, and
Fig. 5 a section taken on the line 5--5 in Fig. 2,
Fig. 6 shows a fragmentary side view of a modified comb made according to the invention,
Fig. 7 a top plan View of the comb of Fig. 6, and
Fig. 8 a section on the line 8-8 in Fig. '7.
The comb illustrated in Figs. 1-5 has two parts I and 2 which have the same number of teeth. The part I is provided with two lateral bearing bodies 4 each having a bore through which a hinge pintle 3 passes. Part 2 is constructed in a similar manner and carries at each end a bearing body 5 and also a further bearing body B lying between these latter ones, the bearing bodies 5 and 6 coming to lie between the bearing bodies 4 when the parts I and 2 are placed together. The two parts I and 2 are connected by means of the pintle 3 passing through the bearing bodies and serving, in addition to connecting means, at the same time as carrier for two coiled springs 1, whose ends abut against the parts I and 2 and tend to swivel these round the pintle 3.
Between the two parts I and 2, in recesses 8 provided below the pintle 3, a body or cleaning element 9 lies which is formed of wadding or a material similar to wadding and provided with bristles B extending therefrom and between the teeth; the element 9 extends along the whole length of the comb and catches and retains dandrui or other such impurities removed from the hair. This cleaning element or bodv 9 is under the pressure of the springs 'I, so that it remains immovable in its position v'hile the comb is being used, but can easily be changed When required.
Although the springs I are disposed free between the two parts I and 2 in the forms of execution shown in the drawing, they may also lie partly in recesses made in these parts, and thereby the distance of the two toothed parts from each other can be diminished.
In the form of execution according to Figs. 6-8 a U-shaped rail Ill is attached by lateral bearing bodies II and by means of the pintle 3 to the part 2 of the comb, and like the part 2 is subject to the pressure of the ends of the coil springs I mounted on the pintle 3. The two ends of the arms of the rail I0 are each bent to form a groove I2. Into the rail I 0 a comb-shaped part I3 is pushed and lies with two longitudinal ribs I4 tting in grooves I2. As in the example of execution according to Figs. 1-5, a body for taking the impurities is located between the parts 2 and I3.
Also the part 2 of the comb could be constructed so that it consists of a U-shaped rail I 0 with an inserted comb-like part I3; in such a case the two comb-like members could be used separately like ordinary combs and only diier from the latter in that they are provided with guide ribs I4 and also with a groove 8. Instead of the guide ribs I4 however, also guide recesses could be provided into which the inwardly bent ends of the arms of the rail IIJ engage as guiding and holding means.
The two toothed comb parts have both the same number of teeth and also the same breadth of teeth, or they could be provided with the same number of teeth and with teeth of unequal breadth.
Having thus described my invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is:
1. A comb comprising two parts having yat one end a plurality of projecting teeth, hinge means connecting said parts together at an opposite end thereof, spring means connected with said parts to urge the same with their teeth toward each other, a cleaning element removably anchored in a location intermediate said parts, bristles proiecting from said element toward and between said teeth whereby foreign matter from the teeth of said parts is taken up by said cleaning element, said hinge means including bearing bodies, one positioned intermediate the others, and a pintle passing through said bearing bodies, said spring means being supported by said pintle.
2. A comb comprising two hinged parts each having proecting teeth, means normally forcing said teeth toward each other, and cleaning means positioned between said parts and remote 3 from said teeth to receive foreign matter from said teeth of said parts, said cleaning means including bristles positioned intermediate said teeth.
