1o claims. (ci. isz-4t) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a comb brush.

The invention has for an object the construc- 'tionof an article as mentioned which is characterized by a. comb body having a hollow back portion open along one end and one side, and comb body.- while in another position to have the bristles extended from the hollow so that the 1: article may be used as a brush.

For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following ydescription and accompanying drawing, and to'the appended i claimsin which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

In the accompanying drawing forming a material lpart of this disclosure: Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a comb brush constructed according to this invention, illustrated with the brush in its extended position.

The comb brush, Aaccording to this invention, includes a comb body l@ having a hollow it in 4 its back'portion,. said hollow being open along the top and along both ends of the comb body.

v On the side directly opposite the open edge of lthe comb body the body is provided with a plurality of projecting comb-teeth E2. A cover i3 is slidably mounted upon the combbody iIl and is adapted to extend lover and cover the top of the opening Il or to be extended therefrom as l0 shown in Fig. l. The cover i3 on its underside is provided with a plurality of bristles It which in the folded conditiony of the comb brush extend into the hollow Il'. The cover I3 has a top wall I3 which extends over the top portion of the hol- 15 low il and side walls 13b which extend partially. over the sides of thecomb body I0. These side Vwalls are provided with projecting tongues I5 ywhich engage into grooves it formed in the sides of the comb body. This inter-engagement serves 20 to slidably support the cover upon the body.

A means is provided for holding the cover I3 in an extended position or in its folded position directly over 'the comb body. This means includes flexible at springs Il mounted on the cover I3 25 and reposed within recesses-I8 formed in the wall Each of the springs Il is fixedly secured on one of its ends by fastening elements I9. The iree ends of these springs Il are provided with pins 2li which extend inwards 30 through openings in the cover I3. The inner ends of the pins 20 are adapted to engage apertures 2| formed in the comb body i2. These apertures are located at the ends of the comb body to be capable of holding the cover extended or re- 35 tracted.

An end plate 22 is hingedly mounted on one end of the cover il by a hinge construction 23. This end plate is shaped to conform with the contour I of the cover Il and the comb body (see Fig. 2).' 40

. A coaxial spring 2d is arranged upon-the hinge 23 and acts between the cover and the end plate 22 for normally urging it into a position at right' angles to the cover. This plate is also shaped toconform with thecontour of the cover-and the endofthe comb body. f Y. 50 The cover 25 is arranged to frictionally maintain positions into which it is placed. Ait' is possible to repose the plate 25 within a recess 2l formed in the top 'of the cover i3. It is also possible to hinge the 'plate 25 downwards to extend u over the end of the comb body as illustrated in Fig. 2.

The operation of the device is as follows:

Fig. 2 illustrates the comb brush in its inoperative position, in which condition it may be car"- ried around in ones pocket or purse or stored upon a vanity or other place. In this condition the comb may be used in the customary manner as a comb.

When required the springs I1 may be flexed to have the pins 20 disengage from the apertures 2l. Then the cover may be moved along the comb body to the position shown in Fig. l, and be held in this position by one oi the springs I1. The bristles I4 may now be used.

In Fig. 5 a modication is shown in which auxiliary bristles I4* and I4b are mounted on one side extension I3 of the slide I3. In Fig. 6 another form is shown in which auxiliary bristles i4* and il are on vboth side extensions I 3 of the slide I3.

"Itis*t1rst required that the side wall section I3y be pivoted slightly outwards against the action of a spring 36 arranged upon the hinge 30. 'Ihenthe-top wall section I 3x must be pulled slightly, to compress the spring 33 and to disengage the pins 35 from their openings. It is then possible to rotate the cover section I3x using the pintle 3i as a pivot.

In this manner it is turned around so that lthe bristles Il extend upwards. When the cover section I3l is released the springs 33 will reengage the pins 35 to hold the same xed. The spring 33 4will return the side wall section' I3y to its original position.

While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments .of my invention, it is to beV understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modications coming within the scope ot the invention as defined in the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new. and desire to secure by United- States Letters Patent is:

1. A comb brush, comprising a comb bodyhav-v` ing a hollow back portion open along one end and one side and comb teeth projecting from another side, a cover i'or closing said open side and open end and having brush bristles extending into said hollow back portion and being slidably mounted, and means for holding said cover extended on said comb body.

2. A comb brush, comprising a comb body having a hollow back portion open along one end and one side and comb teeth projecting from another side, a cover for closing said open side and open end and having brush bristles extending into said hollow back portion and being slidably mounted, means for holding said cover extended on said comb body, and end plates mounted on the ends of said cover for extending across the ends oi' the comb body.

3. A `comb brush. comprising a comb body having a hollow back portion open along one end and one side and comb teeth projecting from another side, a cover for closing said open side and open end and having brush bristles extending into said hollow back portion and being slidably mounted, means for holding said cover' extended on said comb body, and end plates mounted on the ends of said cover for extending across the ends of the comb body, said cover plates being hingedly mounted on the cover.

A comb brush, comprising a comb body having a hollow back portion open along one end and one side and comb teeth projecting from another side. a cover for closing said open side and open end and having brush bristles extending into said hollow back portion and being slidably mounted, means for holding said cover extended on said comb body, and end plates mounted on the ends of said cover for extending across the ends of the comb Abody said cover plates being hingedly mounted on the cover, one of said cover plates being provided with a spring upon its hinge for resiliently urging it against the end o'f the comb body.

5. A comb brush, comprising a comb body having a hollow back portion open along one end and one side and comb teeth'projecting from another side, a cover for closing said open side and open end and having brush bristlesextending into said hollow back portion and being slidably mounted. means for holding said cover extended on said comb body, and end plates mounted on the ends of said cover for extending across the ends o! the comb body, said cover plates being hingedly mounted on the cover, one ot. said cover plates being provided with a spring upon its hinge for resiliently urging it against the end of the comb body, the other of the cover plates being arranged to frictionally maintain positions into which it is placed.

6. A comb brush, comprising a comb body having a hollow back portion open along one end and one side and comb teeth projecting from another side, acover for closing said open side and open end and having brush bristles extending intosaid hollow back portion and being slidably mounted, means-lor holding said cover extended on said comb body, and end plates mounted on the ends 7. A comb brush, comprising a comb body having a hollow back portion open along one end and one side and comb teeth proiecting from another `side, a cover for closing said open side and open end and having brush bristles extending into said hollow back portion and being slidably mounted, means for holding said'cover extended on said comb body, said cover having a top wall and side walls, and additional bristles mounted on said walls.

9. A comb brush, comprising a comb body having a hollow back portion open along one end and one side and comb teeth projecting from another side, a cover forclosing said open side and open end and having brush bristles entending into saidhollow back portion, and being slidably mounted, means for holding said cover extended on said comb body, said cover having a top wall and side walls, 'a portion of said top wall being of separate material from the remaining portion of the cover, said bristles being mounted on said separate portion, and means for holding said separate portions in various positions.

A comb brush, comprising a comb. body having a hollow back portion open along vone end and one side and comb teeth projecting from another side, a cover for closing said open side and open end and having brush bristles extending into said hollow back portion and being slidably mounted, means for holding said cover extended on said comb'body, said c'over having a top wall and side wal1s,'a portion of said top wall being of separate material from the remaining portion of the cover, said bristles being mounted on said separate portion, and means for holding said separate portions in various positions, one of the side walls of said cover being hingedly mounted.
