SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 670,054, dated March 19, 1901.

Application filed January 10, 1901. Serial No. 2,780. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that LMlLLARD E. MOGG,a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in thecounty of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chutes; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The invention relates to chutes, and more particularly to chutes for discharging coal from wagons and carts.

The object of the invention is to provide a chute of this character which shall be simple of construction, durable in use, and comparatively inexpensive of production.

With this and other minor objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is.

a perspective view of my improved chute. Fig. 2 is an end View of the same, and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the frame of the chute.

Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 1 denotes the frame, which consists of the side pieces 2 and 3, which preferably converge and are made of angle-iron and consist of a horizontally-disposed web a and a vertically-disposed web I). To the inner face of the vertical web I), at the forward end, is attached a strapped bail 4, preferably by rivets, and to the rear end of the side pieces 2 and 3 is attached a similar bail 5,which has its ends extending upwardly against the outer face of the web (9, to which it is riveted, and then over the web a and under the same. A hook 7 or other similar device may be riveted to this bail, by means of which the chute is held in the desired posi tion.

8 denotes the chute-body, which preferably consists of sheet-steel made with longitudinal corrugations, if desired, and after-theparts of the frame have been assembled, as above described, the chute-body is bent into shape and fitted into the frame. The ends of said body portion are riveted to the strapped bails 4E and 5, and the edges of the body portion are riveted to the web I) of the side piece of the frame, thus providing a strong, practical, and almost indestructible chute, which, owing to its simplicity, may be placed upon the market at a greatly-reduced cost. These chutes may be arranged in telescopic series when desired; but as this feature is old and forms no part of my invention I have not deemed it necessary to illustrate the same nor to enter into a detailed description thereof.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and mode of operation of my improved chute will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.

Various changes in the form, proportion,

and minor details of con struction may be made within the scope of the invention without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In a chute, the combination with the frame consisting of side pieces formed of angle-iron and having a horizontally-extending web and a vertically-extending web, a strapped bail riveted to the inner face of the vertical web at the forward end of the side pieces, a strapped bail extending upwardly against the outer face of the vertical web and riveted thereto and having its extremities extending over the horizontal web and under the same, of a sheet-metal body portion fitted within the frame and having its ends riveted to said bails and its edges riveted to the vertical web of the side pieces, substantially as setforth.
