Be it known that 1, ELwooD C. PHILLIPS, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Implements for Operating Spring-Bunge, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to an implement for operating spring-bungs into an open or extended condition and holding the same duri ng the operation of removal and insertion.
The object of the present invention is to provide a simple, durable, and effective implement with which the sections of a springbung are forced apart into an open or extended condition and so held during the insertion or removal of the bung or stopper from the barrel hole or opening, all as will hereinafter more fully appear, and be more particularly pointed out in the claims.- I attain such object by the construction and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a spring-bungoperating implement embodying the present invention and showing the spring-bung in section in a normally-closed condition in the barrel-opening and the implement in its initial position of engagement with the bung. Figs. 2 and 3 are fragmentary sectional elevations of the implement in its initial operative engagement with the bung and in its final position to effect an opening or extension of the bung, respectively.
Similar numerals of reference indicate like parts in the different views.
Referring to the drawings, l represents the main section of a spring-bung carrying an elastic closure-skirt 2, 3 the movable member of the bung engaging said skirt, and It a spring tending to draw the two bung members together to effect an expansion of the skirt 2 against the walls of the bung-hole and a rigid engagement of the spring-bung in place.
No claim is made in the present case to the above-described construction of spring-bung, as the sabine constitutes the subject-matter of my prior Letters Patent, No. 668,120, dated February 12, 1901.
The present invention involves a pair of handles 5 and 6, pivoted together at 7 and adapted to be drawn together by hand in an active operation of the implement. At its lower end the implement is provided with laterally-expanding jaws 8 and 9, preferably pivoted together at their upper ends and having outturned lips or anges 10, which in an expanding movement of said jaws are adapted to engage beneath the inturned ange 11 of the bung to connect the implement to the bung against detachment during the active use of the implement.
12 is a longitudinally-moving plunger having a central relation with the jaws 8 and 9 and operatively connected to the handle 6 of the pair of operating-handles by a lateral arm 13 or other equivalent connection, so as to receive positive longitudinal movement therefrom.
14 is a tapering point on the lower end of the plunger adapted to engage the lower ends of the jaws S and 9 and effect a positive expanding movement of the same in the initial active operation of the implement, and said jaws are maintained in such expanded con` dition on a further operation of the implement by the width or diameter of the shank portion of the plunger, as shown.
The scope of the present invention embraces, broadly, an implement having laterally-moving jaws adapted to effect an attach- -ment during use with a spring-bung and means moving at right angles to the movement of such jaws to effect an opening movement of the bung parts, regardless of the particular mechanism employed to accomplish such result.
In the operation of the present implement the operator inserts the implement with its handles in an open condition into the outer central opening of the bung, as illustrated in Fig. 1, after which the handles are pulled together by hand. In an initial movement of such handles together the inclined or tapering point of the plungerl acts to spread the jaws 8 and 9 toeffect an engagement of the same with the inturned flange l1 of the bung and with a continued movement of the handles 8 and 9 together and a consequent downward movement of the plunger 12. Such plunger, by its engagement against the upper end of the movable member 3 of the bung, will force the same downward away from the main IOC bung member or section 1 to effect an open condition of the bung. By maintaining the grasp upon the handles 5 and 6 the operator can maintain the bung partsin such open condition during a removal or insertion of the bung.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In an implement for operating springbungs, the combination of a pair of operating-handles pivoted together, a pair of jaws having outturned bung-engaging lips at their lower ends operatively connected to the handles and adapted to expand laterally with an initial closing movement of the handles, and means capable of longitudinal movement connected to the handles and adapted to be operated by the final closing movement of the handles to engage and impart movement to the movable member of the hung in a direction away from the stationary bung member in engagement with the pair of jaws, substantially as set forth.
2. In an implement for operating springbungs, the combination of a pair of operating-handles pivoted together, a pair of jaws having outturned bung-engaging lips at their lower ends operatively connected to the handles and adapted to expand laterally with an initial closing movement of the handles, and a longitudinallyarranged plunger operatively connected to the handles and adapted to be operated by the final closing movement of the same to engage and impart movement to the movable member of the bung in a direction away from the stationary bung member in engagement with the pair of jaws, substantially as set forth.
3. An implement for operating springbungs, the same comprising, a pair of operating-handles pivoted together, a pair of laterally-moving jaws adapted to engage the bung, and means moving in a longitudinal direction, for engaging and forcing the bung members apart, the same comprising a longitudinally-moving plunger having operative connection with a lateral arm of one of the handles, substantially as set forth.
4f. An implement for operating springbungs, the same comprising, a pair of operating-handles pivoted together, a pair of laterally-moving jaws adapted to engage the bung, and means moving in a longitudinal direction, for engaging and forcing the bung members apart, the same comprising a longitudinally-moving plunger having operative connection with a lateral arm of one of the handles and provided with a tapering end adapted to effect a positive lateral movement of the laterally-expanding jaws, substantially as set forth.
