ALBERT NEAL, 0F MALTA, MONTANA.
. STAPLE-FULLER.
Application filed May 12, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT zen of the United States, residing at Malta, in the county of Valley, State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Staple-Pullers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to staple pullers although the device may be utilized for pulling nails with equal facility.
The object of the invention resides in the provision of a staple puller including cooperating jaws and improved means for forcing the outer ends of said jaws together beneath the bend of a staple.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a staple puller constructed in accordance with the invention; and Fig. 2, is a vertical section of the device.
Referring to the drawings the invention is shown as comprising a tubular body 10 having one end of its bore reduced as at 11 and provided with an opening 12 communicating with the major portion of said bore. Formed on the end of the body 10 remote from the reduced portion of the bore 11 is a fulcrum heel 13 having a flat outer face NEAL, a citi- 14 whereby same may be utilizedfor. the
purpose of driving a nail when desirable. Slidably engaged in the reduced portion 11 of the bore of the body 10- is the stem 15 of a handle 16, said stem being provided with an enlarged portion 17 slidable in the major portion of the bore of the body 10 and serving to prevent disengagement of the handle 16 from the body 10. It will be obvious Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 4, 1916.
Serial No. 27,707.
that the length of the stem 15 is such that the handle 16 is capable of limited longitudmal movement relative to the body 10 whereby same may be utilized as a hammer for forcing the jaws of the device into pulling relation to the element to be extracted. Plvotally mounted in the body 10 at the end thereof remote from the handle 16 are jaws 18 and 19 a portion of which projects outwardly of the adjacent end of the body 10. The outer ends of the jaws 18 and 19 are normally held apart by a spring 20 having its terminals secured to the inner ends of said jaws respectively. Slidably mounted in the major portion of the bore of the body 10 is a wedge 21 which is adapted to be forced between the inner ends of the jaws 18 and 19 and thereby move the outer ends of said jaws together into pulling relation with respect to the element to be extracted. Pivotally mounted in the opening 12 is a lever 22 the inner end of which is pivotally connected with the wedge 21 and whereby the oscillation of the lever 22 will reciprocate the wedge 21. r
In use the wedge 21 is moved toward the handle 16 and the spring 20 will automatically open the jaws l8 and 19 at their outer;
ends. Said jaws are then placed in embraclng relation to the staple to be extracted and the wedge moved in the opposite direction by the lever 22 to force the outer ends of the jaws beneath the staple. The parts are held in this relation to the lever 22 and the device rocked on the fulcrum heel 13 to effect extraction. When working in tough wood the handle 16 may be operatedas a hammer to force the outer ends of the jaws 18 and 19 into pulling relation with respect to the staple to beextracted.
What is claimed is A staple puller comprising a tubular body member provided with an opening and having a fulcrum heel at one end, a pair of jaws pivoted in the bore of the body at the end thereof adjacent the fulcrum heel and having their outer ends disposed outwardly of the adjacent end of the body, spring means constantly tending to force the outer ends of said jaws apart, a wedge slidably mounted in the bore of the body and adapted to move between the inner ends of said jaws ited longitudinal movement relative to the to force the outer ends thereof together, a body. lever pivotedin said opening'in the wall of In testimony whereof, I afiix my signathe body and having its inner end pivotally ture in the presence of two witnesses. 5 connected to the wedge whereby the oscilla- ALBERT NEAL.
