Description

EJLCGRKERY.
CORK PULL-BR.'
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 11. 1913.
EDMUND J'. CORKERY, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
CORK-runnen.
Application filed September lll, y3.913. Serial N o. 789,391.
To all wtom t may concern.'
B e it known that I, EDMU'ND J. CORKERY, a citizen of the United States of America,
- residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, vhaveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in.
CoikPullers; and I. do hereby declarethe following to be la full, clear,l and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap-` pertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in cork pullers, and its object is to provide a device of this character 'which may be cheaply made; which willeffectively remove corks from bottles without breaking the cork, and with small manual eort; andto provide the vdevice with various new and Auseful features hereinafter more lully described Aand particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had toitr drawings, in which A Figure l is a plan view of a device embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a' section of the saine on the line l2--2 of Fig. l; Fig. '3
illustrates the device in position to pull laj cork which is wholly` within the neck.of a
bottleand Fig. shows the puller gripping a cork which projects out of the neck of the bottle. v
Like numbers refer tolike parts in all of the figures. A
This cork puller comprises a pair of pliers having jaws l and 2 pivoted together by a holt 3' and actuated by handles'l. The tips of the, jaws l and 2 are provided with inwardly projecting prongs l? andQ* adapted to gripl alcofrk 5; A cork screw 6 is attached toal 'plategwhich is interposed between the jawsl and@ attheir pivotal connection and the pivot bolt 3, whichy is preferably removable, passes `through 'the said lplate.y The cork screw 't5 extends between the jawsl and 2 and is long enough to project beyond the' same.
This device may be operated under various'conditions, as for example, fwhenthe cork to be removed is wholly within the neck 8 of the bottle, thel jaws may be opened widely as illustrated in Fig. 3 and the cork screw 6 inserted in the cork until the opened jaws engage the end of the bottle, and willl act as leversv engaging the end of the bottle and willI withdraw the cork until its end prlpjects from the bottle. The jaws may then .be closed so that fthe spurs la and 2 he accompanyingthereon will grip the end of the assist in withdrawing the sanne..v
If the operator desires, he may, in removing a cork which is wholly within the bottle as above described, close the jaws befre insei-ting the cork screw in the cork, and by turning the said screw the jaws will engage Specication of Letters Patent. f Patented Apr. 21, 1914. v
cork and v the mouth of the bottle prevent-ing further' downward movement, and further turningk of the screw will raise the cork to the mouth of the bottle by the action of the screw in the cork. This will loosen the cork sufficiently so that it can thenbe withdrawn by pulling on the handles.
It is obvious, of course, that if the cork already projects from t-he bottle, it is merely necessary to insert the cork screw therein and grip the projecting end withthe prongs` on the jaws and draw the cork by pulling on i the handles, the prongs assisting the screw to hol-d to the cork.
Itgwill be seen that this device provides 'means' whereby any cork, no matter how.
firmly. insertedv in the bottle, may be easily withdrawn, and furthermore the jaws will grip thecork on its'periphery and aid the cork screw andpreventpulling the screw out of the cork.
If the corkscrew should accidentally become broken the-plate 7 may be removed' by removing the pivot bolt 3. and a new plate and corkscrew substituted.
What I claim is l. A cork puller, comprising a pair of pliers, one member of which serves as a lever to engage the mouth of a bottle andra cork screw attached to'v said member and adapted to enter acork in said bottle. h y
2. A cork'puller, 'comprising a pair of jpliers and a cork screw. attached to said pliers and extending between the jaws thereof, said pliers being adapted to engage the mouthgof a bottle to ,act as a lever to raise the corkand to grip the cork to aid `the cork screw.
3. A cork puller, comprising a pair of pliers having prongs on its jaws and a cork y screw attached to said pliers and extending between the jaws thereof, said pliersbeing adapted to engage the mouth of a bottle tov act as a double lever to raise ythe cork and to grip the cork to ald thecork screw. c
4. A cork puller,- comprlsmg a pair of A pliers and a cork screw pivotally attached to said pliers at their pivotal connection, and extending betweenl the jaws of the same, said pliers being adapted to` engage the mouth of a. bottle to act as a doublelever to raise the cork. or to engage the cork to aid the cork screw.
5. A cork" puller, comprising a pair of pliers vhaving prongs on its Jaws, a removable pivot bolt Ato connect said jaws, and a cork screw pivotally attabhed to said pliers' by said pivot bolt, said jaws being adapted to engg'e the mouth of u bottle to act as a 10 double lever to raise the cork or to engage said cork to aid the eork screw. f In testimony whereof I afx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
