TYPE WRITER DESK.
- {Application led Mar. 19, 1900.)

NTTED STATES PATENT EEICE.
MAGNUS J. HAFGAR, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSlGNOR TO OLAF C. OLSEN, OF SAME PLACE.
TYPE-WRITER DESK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 665,678, dated January 8, 1901.
Application filed March 19, 1900,
To all whom. t may concern.:
Be itknown thatI, MAGNUs J. HAFGAR, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Writer Desks, of which the following is a specication and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
This invention relates to that type of typewriter desks in which an oscillating table is provided for carrying the typewriter and an oscillating cover is provided for closing the well within which the table is hung, the cover and table being so connected that as the former is opened the latter is brought to horizontal position.
The objects of the invention are to simplify and cheapen the construction of desks of this type and to generally improve the same. These objects are attained in the construction hereinafter fully described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a transverse vertical section of a type-writer desk, taken through its well. Fig. 2 is a detail section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail front View of the desk. Fig. 4 is a vertical section on the same plane as Fig. l, the desk being open; andFig. 5 is a detail section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 4.
The desk lO may be of any suitable style or design and is provided with a well, one wall of which is shown at l1. The cover 12 for the well is so mounted that it may descend into the latter in opening, and the table 13 for carrying the type-writer is supported by means of links and levers attached to the side walls of the well of the desk and connected also with the cover, so that as the latter is opened and closed the table is brought forwardly to a horizontal position or carried backwardly and downwardly to an inclined position within the well, A shelf 1,4 across the bottom and rearward portion of the well receives the lower or rearward end of the table when the desk is closed, and a rail 15, depending from the forward end of the cover 12, contacts with the forward or upper end of the table. A rod 16 extends across the well and serves as a support for the forward end of the table. A link 17 is pivoted to the wall 1l above the depressed position of the 17 and 18.
Serial No. 9.239. (No model.)
table and to the table itself and guides the latter in its movements. Asecond link 18 is attached to the table and to the short arm of a bell-crank lever 19, which is pivoted to the Awall l1 at 20, its long arm being pivotally attached to the cover 12 near its forward end, as shown at 21. A link 22 is pivoted to the wall 11 and to a bracket 24 near the rearward end of the cover 12, this link serving as a guide and support for the rearward end of the cover.
Assuming the desk to be closed, it is opened by raising the forward end of the cover 12, the lever 19 causing the cover to swing backwardly as it is raised, thereby causing the link 22 to swing upon its pivot 23 and guide the rearward end of the table downwardly. The backward movement of the long arm of the lever 19 raises its short arm and with it the table 13, which is caused to advance by the link 17, the forward end of the table sliding upon the rod 16.
When the table 13- assumes a horizontal position, the rearward end of the cover 12 rests upon the shelf 14. As the short ar'rn of the bell-crank 19 now projects upwardly, lthe line of support thereby of the table 12 is brought closer to the pivot-point 20 of the lever, and the cover 12 thereby is provided with an augmented leverage, so as to provide a firm support for the table.
In Vclosing the desk the cover is lifted and the lever 19 and link 22 guide it to its closed position, the action of the lever 19 and link 17 causing a depression or recession of the table.
A wear-plate 25 is secured to the side edge of the table 13, so as to run upon the rod 16, and this plate is continued backwardly, so as to form a means of attachment for the links Clearance-space for the link 22 is provided by cutting away the rearward portion of the side of the table 13, as shown in Fig. 3.
A guide and stop block 26 is fixed to the side wall 1l and is engaged by an inclined block 27, fixed upon the table 13, so that when the latter is in its advance position it is held against accidental vertical displacement by the block 26.
It will be understood, of course, that the system of links and levers hereinbefore described are duplicated, there being one set at each side of the table, as is usual in desks of this type.
I claim as my invention- 1. In combination, a, desk having n, Well, an oscillating table Within the Well, an oscillating @over for the Well, e bell-crank lever pivoted at its :ingle to the desk-Wall, one of its ends being pivoted to the @over near its forward end, a link connecting the other end of the lever With the table, a link pivoted to the table and to the desl{-\vall, ztnd a, link connecting the rearward end of the cover with the desk-Wall.
2. In combination, 2t desk having a, Well, :in oscillating table Within the well, tu oseil` lating @over for the Well, zt bell-crank lever pivoted :it its angle to the desk-wall, one of its ends being pivoted to the Cover, a, link connecting the other end of the lever with Jthe table, a, link pivoted to the table audio the desk-Wall, a link connecting the @over Wit-h the desk-Wall, and 2t fixed support for the forward end of the table.
3. In Combination, a desk having a Well, am oscillating table Within the Well, an oseilleting @over for the well, a bell-crank lever pivoted at its angle to the desk-Wall, one of its ends being pivoted to the Cover, a link connecting the other end of the lever with the table, a link connecting 'the table with the desk-wall, et link connecting the cover With the desk-wall, a fixed support for the foi-Ward end of the table, and a guide-block above the forward end of the table.
