rurnn STATES EDWVARD E. BAKER, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
TYPE-WRITER CABINET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 625,082, dated May 16, 1899.
. Application filed December 14,1898. Serial ITO-699,234. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern;
Be it known that I, EDWARD E. BAKER, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Type-WVriterOabinets, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical cross-section showing the desk in open position and with the carrying-table removed, and Fig. 2 is a similar section showing the parts in closed position.
My invention relates to the cabinets or desks which are arranged to hold type-writers, sewing-machines, or similar articles; and its object is to obtain a simple and effective construction by means of which the carrying-table for the machine may be held in a substantially horizontal position when the desk is closed, this carrying-table moving vertically in substantially parallel planes in opening and closing the desk.
In the drawings, 2 represents a desk having a back 3 and provided with a table-receiving opening which is closed by the sides 4 and an inclined front board 5. The front board is rigidly secured in place and forms a way and guide for the carrying-table 6, which consists of a box-like structure having an inclined front face provided with small rollers 7, which travel upon the front board 5 as the carrying-table moves up or down. Angular links 8 are pivoted to the ends of the carrying box or table near its top, and the upper arms of these angle-links are pivotally conthe table when in its upper position.
nected with bell-crank levers 9, which are pivoted at 10 to the cabinet at the ends of the cavity receiving the table. The front ends of these bell-crank levers are pivotally con-. nected to the front portion of the top section or the front rail 11, secured thereto, and their elbow portions are preferably provided with stop-pins 12, which contact with the anglelinks 8 when the desk is opened, as shown in Fig. 1, and prevent backward movement of Each end of the carrying table or box is preferably provided with steadying-pins 13, which are adapted to engage with the lower horizontal arms of the angle-links 8, thus acting to steady the upward-and-downward movement of the carrying table or box Which-s11 pports the machine.
To the rear end portions of the swinging top section I connect long pivotal links 14, which swing in vertical planes outside the bell-crank levers and are pivoted to the sides of the recess or cavity at 15. Theselevers may be curved near their lower ends, so that they may not interfere with the joints between the bell-crank levers and the angle-links.
16 is a counterweight consisting of a bar of metal secured to the rear portion of the coversection, and 17 is a sliding shelf or board upon which the machine rests.
It is evident that with the construction shown when the cover-section is tilted back wardl y from the closed position shown in Fig. 2 this cover-section will swing through an arc whose center is constantly changing, and during this movement the bell-crank levers and their link connections with the carrying-table will lift this table upwardly into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, it bein g guided in its movement by the front board 5, along the inner face of which it is moved. When thus brought into the open position, the sliding board upon which the type-writer or other machine rests may be pulled forward to the point desired.
The advantages of my invention result from the simple and efiective mechanism by which the carrying-table is moved up and down in parallel planes without tilting, so that the machine need not be firmly secured thereto, as in constructions where the carrying-table is tilted in closing the desk. This movement is obtained without any complicated construction of pulleys and connecting-cords, and the movements are positive and the parts not liable to get out of order.
Many changes may be made in the form and arrangement of the mechanism for moving the carrying-table without departing from my invention, since I consider myself the first to provide mechanism by which this table is moved in parallel lines without the use of flexible-cord connections.
I claima 1. The combination with a desk or table having a tilting top section, of bell-crank levers pivoted to the desk, one arm of each lever being pivotally connected to the front portion of the top section, a machine-support having vers pivoted to the desk and pivotally 0011-; nected with the front portion of the top section, a machine-carryin g table, bent or curved links pivotally connecting the bell-crank levers to said machine-table, and links pivotally connecting the rear portion of the tilting' top With the desk, the machine-table moving vertically in parallel planes as the top is tilted; substantially as described.
3. The combination with a desk or cabinet having a tilting top, of liftinglevers fulcrumed to the desk and pivotally connected with the front of the tilting top, a machinetable and link connections between the levers and said table, arranged to move said table vertically in parallel planes; substantially as described.
4. The combination with a desk or table having a tilting top section, of lifting-levers f ulcrumed t0 the desk, and pivoted to the tilting top section, a machine-table having link connections With the levers arranged to move the same vertically in parallel planes, and a stop arranged to contact with the lever mechanism and hold the table firmly in place at the upper position thereof; substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
EDWARD E. BAKER.
