FERNANDO BIANCHI Y RECHE, OF MADRID, SPAIN.
OFFICE DESK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July ii, 1922.
Application filed February 26, 1920. Serial No. 361,593.
To all "whom it may concern 1 Be it known that I, Fnuxrnoo BLANCH! Y Brena, a subject of the King of Spain, residing at No. 7 Calle del Marques de Cuhas, lriadrid, Province of Madrid. Spain. have invented a new and useful Office Desk (for which l have filed application for patent in Spain. No. 69905 dated February 8, 1919). of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in articles of furniture such as desks or'writing cabinets. the object of the invention being to provide an improved article of this kind embodying a top, a lower work board. and means to enable said work board and topto be simultaneously operated so that when the top is raised and moved rearwardly out of the way the lower board is also raised and moved forwardly in convenient position for using a typewriting machine or doing other work thereon.
Another object of the invention is to provide a shutter for the desk or cabinet and to also provide a locking device for the top and which is automatically operated by the curtain so that when the top is lowered and closed upon the upper side of the desk and the shutter raised to the required position to close the front of the desk, he head of the shutter will cause said locking device to automatically engage and lock said top.
Another object of the invention is to provide operating means for the top and lower board embodying a yielding spring which prevents the top and lower board from moving with jolts or jars and causing them to move easily and smoothly under all conditions. V
' lVith the above and other objects in view the invention consists of the construction, arrangement and combination of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In. the accompanying drawings:
Figure l is a vertical sectional view of the desk constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention, and showing the boards in full lines in position for use and in dotted lines in closed position.
Figure 1%; is a detail perspective view of the operating shaft and its connections.
The article of furniture embodying my invention, is here shown as a desk, having a frame or body 1 and supporting legs 2. Said body is open at the top and also at the sides and front. The top is indicated at A and the lower board at B. Said lower board is pivotally connected to the upper end of levers C. D, the lower ends of which are pivotally mountedv in the frame or body of the desk as shown.
The lever D up to about a third of its length is placed inaction to another lever E which is in its turn placed in action to an arm of the connecting rod F in connection with a spring T. the tension of which can he graduated by means of the handle G.
The top A is in its turn joined to a bent lever H moved with another one I, the end of which is joined in a revolving way to the lever D.
The bent lever H is joined revolving-1y to the top in the point J.
This top A has in its inside part a projection K moved by means of hinges or other similar means with the board L which is revolving in. respect to the vertical board M by means of the piece Nor other appropriate means.
Considering this improvement or aspect of the invention applied to a typewriting table such as is shown in the drawing, we see that in a reposing situation the lower board B remains inside the table while the upper one serves as a board of the same, the leaf or board L remaining horizontal and adjusted to the space 0.
In this position the top A rests upon the sides of the table and is immovable by the action of the hook or the little safety lever P which owing to its special form, and as will be described later on is obliged to insert itself in the projecting screw Q when the shutter R is raised.
When the board B (which is destined to support the typewriter) has to be used the shutter R will be first pulled down and the board A will be slightly pushed backwards. Owing to the bent lever H and to the hinged connection between the projection K of the top A and the leaf L said leaf will turn upwardly and said top A while always preserving a horizontal position will also be elevated and said movement will be continuous until the levers G, D are in vertical position. This advance movement will take place without roughness or force as the tension of the spring T transmitted to the arm of the connecting rod F in action to the lever E serves as a brake to any too violent displacement.
tension of this spring can be graduated by 7 means of the handle.
To return the table ."to its normal "state it is only necessary to slightly pull the top A forwardly whereupon all the levers of the mechanism turning'on their axles will effect the precise movements to make the top advance, the lower board receding and both descend till placedin the required position.
All the aforementioned levels are disposed in duplicate transmitting their action to both sides of the board towhich they are connected.
As can be seen in the drawings, Figure 1,
there are disposed in the two lateral boards of the table and for pivotal movement, two securing levers P, one on each side which have 'a form of an obtuse angle wide. apart, the inclination of which corresponds to the one that enters in the form of a talus or slope which the upper 'bar of the shutter R has in'its inside part; i The upper end of these small safety levers has a head tree made to be hooked on to the screw or similar disposition Q placed on the top;
When the table "s to be closed, and the shutter raised the bar will engage the small safety lever P and turn the same on its pivot in the required direction to cause the forked upper portion of said lever toengage the hook on the screw Q, and thereby lock the top A in place.
On lowering the shutter to open the table, said bar engages the lower arm of said'lever and turns the said lever in therequired direction to disengage the screw Q.
As can be quite appreciated no manual movement is needed for the working of the small safety levers P as the same are operated automatically by the bar.
Having sufliciently described the present invention the following is declared to be new and novel.
Claims V 1. In an article of furniture, a frame, a leaf loosely pivotally connected to the rear upper side of the frame, a toppivotally connected to said leaf, a bell-crank leverpivotally mounted in the frame and having one of its arms pivotally connected to the upper board, a lower board, levers having their lower ends pivotally mounted in the frame and their upper ends p'ivotally connected to the lower board, and a link connecting the other arm of said bell-crank lever to one of the last named levers.
' 2. In an article of fin'niture,- a frame, a board pivotally mounted on the same for longitudinal and vertical'swinging movement, a locking element for said board, pivotally mounted in the frame, and comprising a pair of angularly related arms, and a shutter mounted in grooves in said frame and having a head and arranged for movement in a path which :is intersected by the upper arm of said locking element, when said board is raised and moved rearwardly.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presenceof two witnesses.
