Description
J. GILBERT.
. LAND ROLLER.
(Applicatim filed Jan. 6, 1899.)
(N0 Model.)
mm com I 4 Patented June 19, I900.
gnwntoz 6 Hon "$1 0 UNITED STATES PATENT JOHN GILBERT, OF FISHER, MINNESOTA.
LAN D-RO LLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent N 0. 652,100, dated June 19, 1900. Application filed an ary 6, 1899. Serial No. 701,423. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN GILBERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fisher, in the county of Polk and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Land-Roller, of which the following is a specification.
The objects of myinvention are to provide a machine of suflicient weight to thoroughly compress the ground over which it is drawn and at the same time be propelled with comparative ease, to give the parts freedom of motion, to afford easy means for conveyance; and to provide a machine of this class in which the rollers will revolve and at the same time oscillate freely and independently of each other.
To these ends the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of the parts of the'same, as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing the figure presented is a View in perspective of a land roller embodying improvements of my invention.
Referring by numerals to said drawing, 1 designates the front crushing-roller, which comprises a hub 2,connected with a Wide felly 3 by staggered spokes 4 and 5. Upon or surrounding the periphery of said felly 3 is mounted and suitably secured thereto a crushing or pulverizing tire 6 of a width equal to the width of the felly 3. The crushing or pulverizing tire 6 has its crushing-surface grooved transversely to form pulverizingteeth 7, which crush and pulverize the ground over which said roller passes as the landroller is drawn forward. The roller 1 is mounted upon a suitable axle 8,seated in bearings or boxes secured to the lower faces of the side rails 9 9 of the frame 10, which is provided with a tongue 11, to which a team may be hitched, and is also provided with a seat 12, secured to the rear cross-beam 13 of said frame 10.
14 and 15 designate two crushing and pulverizing rollers, similar in construction to, though of slightly-larger dimensions than, the crushing-roller 1. The rollers 14 and 15 are mounted in independent supportingframes 16 and 17, hinged together bya coupling 18, detachably secured to said frames at their adj acent front corners in the front beams 23 and 24 of said frames 16 and 1'7. Oonverging draft-beams 19 20 21 22 are connected at their rear ends to the lower faces of said beams 23 and 24; and are provided at their meeting ends with a suitable coupling 25 to connect said frames with the front frame 10 when it is desired to employ all three of the crushing-rollers at one time.
When it is desired to pass through a gateopening, the rear rollers 14 and 15 may be disconnected from the front roller 1 by opening the coupling 25, removing the pin 26, and removing also the coupling 18 from the front beams 23 and 24. The three rollers may be then taken through the gate-opening and again put together in operative connection.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a land-roller, the combination with the supporting-frame provided with a suitable draft attachment and a drivers seat, of a crushing or pulverizing roller comprising a hub and felly connected by alternating staggered spokes; and a crushing or pulverizing tire mounted upon the exterior of said felly and having its crushing surface grooved transversely throughout the entire width of the same to form integral pulverizing-teeth; substantially as specified.
2. In a land-roller, the combination with a crushing-roller 1 mounted in a suitable draftframe and provided with a crushingtire grooved transversely throughout its entire width in its outer periphery to form integral pulverizing-teeth; of two similarly-grooved crushing-rollers 14: and 15 mounted in supporting-frames separably connected to each other and detachably and separably connected with the supporting-frame of said crushing-roller 1; substantially as specified.
JOHN GILBERT.
