Patented Dec. 30, 1879.

beam, 1), connected by strong front and rear UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
STEPHEN J. FISHER, OF EAST PLEASANT, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT lN COMBINED LAND-ROLLER AND CLOD-CRUSHER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 223,125, dated December 30, 1879 application filed November 8, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEPHEN J. FISHER, of East Pleasant, in the county of Kosciusko and State of Indiana, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Combined Land- Roller and (Hod-Crusher; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a side view of my improved land-roller and clod-crusher, and Fig. 2 is a top view of the same.
This invention has relation to means for crushing clods and pulverizing lumpy soil; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the eight-square rollers following each other in sets of three, said rollers being journaled in boxes which are let into recesses in the beams of the frame and bolted thereto, as hereinafter shown and described.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the frame of the land-roller, consisting of two side beams, a, and one middle transverse beams 0, the ends of which are. mortised into the side beams, and the central portions of which are mortised to receive the tenoned ends of the middle beam.
B indicates the rollers, which are made eight-square or octagonal in form, as shown, and are arranged in sets of three following each other on each side of the middle beam, b. Each roller is provided with strong journals d at its ends, which are seated in boxes 6,
which are let into recesses g in the side and middle beams, and secured by means of strong bolts 71 which pass up through the boxes and beams, and are fastened by nuts is on the upper edges of the latter.
The object of these rollers is to break up the clods by successive mashing blows from angular and flattened surfaces, the former having a breakingaction and the latter a pulverizing effect, the eflici'ency of the rollers being rendered complete by arranging them in sets of three on each side of the middle beam, and thereby separating each two rollers which are in line with each other, so as to allow the eight corners of each roller full play. By letting the boxes of the roller-journals into the beam they are strongly secured in place, and are not liable to be disarranged or loosened by the rough action of the angular rollers.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
The clod crusher and pulverizer herein described, consisting of the rectangular frame having the middle beam, 1), and side beams, a, the eight-square rollers B, arranged three on each side of the middle beam following each other and journaled .in boxes 0, let into the under edges of said beams, and bolted thereto by through-bolts h, as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
STEPHEN J. FISHER.
Witnesses WILLIAM SEAL, IRA G. SowLEs.
