PLOW.
No. 380 052 Patented Mar. 27, 1888.

UNITED STATES PATENT Q FICE.
JAMES PORTEOUS, OF FRESNO, CALIFORNIA.
PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 380,052, datedMarch 27, 1888 Application filed December 24, 1887. Serial No. 258,932; (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES PoRTEoUs, of the city and county of Fresno, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Flows; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to that class of plows in which a single beam is made to carry two plow-bottoms and my invention consists in the combination, with a single straight beam, of two plow-bottoms and in the form of standards carrying said bottoms, said standards being secured directly to the beam and bent outwardly in opposite directions, whereby the requisite width between the lines of travel of theplow-bottoms is obtained.
My invention further consists in the novel form of the standards and in the flanges by which they are bolted to the beam. In plows of this class, where a single beam carries two plow-bottoms, it is usual to bend the beam, so as to provide for the separation of the plowbottoms, and in some cases, where a straight beam is used, blocks of wood have been bolted to the sides of the beam,so as to secure the necessary separation.
It is the object of my invention to secure the required width in the most simple manner, and by the most effective construction avoiding both the bent beam and the blocks with the straight beam, and using instead a single straight beam and bolting the standards directly to it, the separation'of the plow bottoms being effected by bending outwardly the standards.
A further obj eot'is to secure the standards in such a way as to best resist the twisting sti ain which results from their being bent.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a plan. Fig. 3 is a view showing a single vertical flange on top of the standard. Fig. 4 is a view showing a double flange.
A is a single straight plow-beam.
B is one plow-bottom in front.
0 is the second plow'bottom following, and
D are the handles.
E are the standards by which the plow-bottoms are secured to the beam. These are bent outwardly in opposite directions, and are bolted above directly to the beam. The outward and opposite bend of the standards provides for the necessary separation of the lines therefore, resort to bending the beam or interposing blocks (which are liable to twist) H between the standards and the beam. In order, however, to afford sufficient space for the earth to turn over between the standards, I must make the bend insaid standards wholly at the top, so as to throw their bodies as far apart as is required. It will be seen, therefore, that it'is not possible to bend them anywhere but at the top. Now, on account of 65,
the bend in the standards, the pressure against the plow-bottoms occasions a twisting strain on the standards, and in order to resistthis to the best advantage I have the following construction: The top of each standard is bent over horizontally, forming the flange e, which side I have a'second vertical flange, 0', pass-' ing upon the other side of the beam and boltedthereto; but. this second flange is forward of.the first one, so that their bolts will not interfere or unduly weaken the beam.
I am aware that bent standards are not, broadly, new, and I .do not claim such; but in'this class of plows such standards, when forming part of the general structure, render it possible to provide a plow of the simplest character andyetwholly effecti\-'e in struction.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim asnew, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a plow, the straight beam, in combination with the plow-bottoms and the oppositely-bent standards having a horizontal tially'as herein described.
2. In a plow, the straight beam, in combi- I nation with the plow-bottoms and the oppositely bent standards having a horizontal flange bolted up under the beam andvertical ICO flanges one in advance of the other and bolted on each side of the beam, substantiallyas herein described.
In witness-whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
Witnesses: JAMES PORTEOUS.
