FENDER.
No. 354,978.. Patented Dec. '28, 1886.
muxho UNIT D STATES PATENT OFFICE.
' WILLIAM L. G ENTRY, OF CHAPMAN, OTTAWA COUNTY, KANSAS, AS-
S IGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN T. GENTRY, OF SAME PLACE.
FENDER.
QPBCIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 354,978, dated December 28, 1886.
Application filed August 17, 1886. Serial No. 211,110.
To aZZ whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. L. GENTRY, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chapman township, Ottawa county, Kansas, near Miltonvale, in the county of Gloud'and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fenders for Cultivators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of my invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention attached to the plow-beams of a cultivator. Fig. 2 is a detail view in perspective of the under or rear bonnet with the minor fenders attached. Fig. 3 is a detail view in perspective of the upper or forward bonnet.
Similar-letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple, cheap, and easily-attached and easily adjusted fender for cultivators, which shall be suitable to any and all kinds of soil.
As will readily be seen, it consists of two distinct parts, A and B, which may each be used separately, if desired. Each part is made of sheet metal or other suitable material formed in the shape of an arch, one extending under the other and having a slot, 9, and holes h h, so that by means of set screws or bolts the two, when used together, may be adjusted to any required length. The minor fenders G O, which are made of some suitable flexible material,as sheet-iron-are attached one to each of the rear corners of the rear fenders, each of which, having a ver tical slot,f, therein, admits of the raising or lowering of said minor fenders at will.
Attached to the forward bonnet, A, is an upright standard, D, having thereon the adjustable lug 13, through which are mortises d d, crosswise of the standard. The arms a a are run through said mortises and held in place by the set-screws e e. The outer ends (No model.)
.the plow-beams by means of said swivels b b.
The mortises d d are slightly longer than the width of the arms a (4, thereby allowing free play to said arms as the level of the shovels and fender changes.
The object of the bonnet B is to break the coarse earth as it rolls along the sides of the bonnet, and the minor fenders O O ease down the remaining clods, thereby saving the plants from being broken or covered'by reason of said clods being precipitated thereon. Should the soil be loamy or sandy, only the bonnet A need be used.
Heretofore arched fenders have been proposed for cultivators, and in another instance a vertical fender-plate has been provided with an auxiliary fender-plate to shorten or lengthen said fender. Such features, therefore, I do not broadlyclaim.
Having thus I claim is- 1. The combination, in a fender for cultidescribed my invention, what vators, of two arched sections, A and B, one
extending beneath the other and adjustably 2. The combination, in a fender for cultivators, of two arched sections, A and B, one extending beneath the other and adjustably connected together, with a standard secured to the upper arched fender-section, and lateral arms carried by the standard to connect with the plow-beams at opposite sides of the arched fender, substantially as described.
3. The combination, in a fender for cultivators, of two arched sections, A and B, one extending beneath the other and 'adjustably connected together, with a standard, D, secured to the arched upper section, laterallyadjustable arms a, carried by the standard, and a plow-beam located at opposite sides of the fender, and connected with said arms, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my sig nature in presence of two witnesses.
W. L. BABBITT, O. H. Srown.
