Description

Patented Apr. 4, I899. Y. GRIMLAND.
PLOW. (Application fi led Apr. 30, 1898.)
(No Model.)
Nirnn STATES .FFICE.
PATENT PLOW.
SPECIFICATION'forming part of Letters Patent No. 622,346, dated April 4, 1899.
Application filed April 30, 1898. Serial No. 679,368. (No model.)
To all whom, it ntcty concern.-
Be it known that I, YEREN GRIMLAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clifton, in the county of Bosque and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Plow, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is designed to provide a plow particularly adapted for black land and subsoiling and which can be used for general purposes for bedding and breaking the land.
The chief objects in view are to provide a plow of light draft capable of penetrating deeply into the soil and which will be effective in operation and involve a substantial construction, so as to be lasting.
For a full understanding of the merits and advantages of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings and the following description.
The improvement is susceptible of various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, and to a full disclosure of the invention an adaptation thereof is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a plow specially designed for effecting the objects of this invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is a side elevation. Fig. 4 is a rear view,
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The plow comprises a central beam 1 and side beams 2 and 3 of like formation and bolted or otherwise firmly secured to opposite sides of the beam 1. The rear end portions of the side beams are curved downwardly and receive plow-points 4, which are formed of long narrow strips of metal rigidly attached to the lower ends of the side beams and having their upper end portions twisted so as to throw the slice to one side in the formation of the furrow or trench. The lower or active end portions of the plow-points are in the line of motion of the plow and cut a slice, which is deflected to one side by the lateral curvature or twist given to the upper end portions of the plow-points. The side beams are of different relative lengths and are set the one in advance of the other, so as to throw the plow-points into such a position that the one will operate in advance of the other.
The handles 5 have their lower front ends brought together and resting upon the beams and are reinforced by metal straps 6, secured to the outer sides of the handles, and having their front ends bent downwardly and embracing the sides of the beams 2 and 3 and secured thereto. Braces 7 connect the handles with the rear end of the central beam and are extended downwardly and connect with the rear portion of the side beams. One of the braces 7 has its lower end portion inclining forwardly, as shown at 8, and secured to the rear portion of the short beam 2, and the other brace has its end continued down and made fast to the rear portion of the beam 3, as shown at 9. The upper and lower end portions of the braces are divergent from their connection with the beam 1, as indicated most clearly in Fig. 4. A horizontal brace 10 connects the rear portions of the beams 2 and 3 and is secured thereto by the same fastenings connecting the lower ends of the braces 7 therewith.
The peculiar formation of the plow-points enables them to penetrate the soil to a great depth, while at the same time providing a plow of comparatively light draft. The plowpoints are located in different vertical planes, this arrangement being attained by plOVld ing ofisets in the side beams, as clearly indicated in Fig; 2.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a central beam and side beams secured to opposite sides of the central beam and provided at their lower ends with plow-points, of handles having their front ends secured to the central beam, and braces secured at an intermediate point to opposite sides of the rear end of the central beam and having their end portions extending above and below the central beam upon divergent lines and secured respectively to the handles and rear end portions of the side beams, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination with a central beam and side beams of different lengths secured to opposite sides of the central beam and provided at their lower ends with plow-points, of handles secured at their front ends to the central beam, braces secured at an interme-' diate point to opposite sides of the rear end port-ion of the central beam and having their end portions extending above and below the central beam upon divergent lines and making connection with respectively the handles and rear end portions of the side beams, the lower end portion of one of the braces extending forwardly, and ahorizontal brace connecting the rear end portions of the side beams, substantially as set forth.
3. In an agriculturalimplement, the combination with a central beam, and side beams secured to opposite sides of the central beam, of handles secured together with their front ends arranged upon the central beam, the metal reinforcingstraps secured to the outer sides of the handles and having their lower ends projecting below the front ends of the same and secured to and embracing the said side beams, and braces extending from the side beams to the handles and connected at an intermediate point to the central beam, substantially as described.
4. In an agricultural implement, the combination of a central beam, handles having their front ends arranged upon the central beam, side beams located at opposite sides of the central beam, and the metal reinforcingstraps secured to the outer sides of the handles and having their lower terminals projecting below the same and embracing and secured to the side beams, substantially as do scribed.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
