UNITED; STATES PATENT FFICE.
HOMER P. GOFF, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
BUTTON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 642,442, dated January 30, 1900.
Application filed March 2, 1899.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOMER P. GOFF, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and-State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Buttons, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a top plan view showing the stamped blank from which the button is formed. Figs. 2 and 3 are perspective views of the button ready for use, looking at the front and rearof the same, respectively. Figs. 4 and 5 are front and rear views of the button, partly broken away 5 and Fig. 6 is an edge view of the same.
My invention relates to that class of buttons which are adapted to be secured in place without sewing, and it is designed to provide a button of this character which can be cheaply and easily made and attached, and, further, to provide such a button with a drawer-supporting device, which forms a part thereof.
In the drawings, referring to Fig. 1, 2 indicates a sheet-metal blank which is stamped up in the contour shown and is provided with internal cut portions 3 and 4, these portions preferably being cut during the stamping of the blank. Small prongs 5 are also cut in the. blank, and the blank is then doubled and the cut portions 3 and 4 bent outwardly, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The portion 3 forms the button proper, 6,which projects from the front of the front leg 9 of the clip, while the portion 4 forms a drawer-supporting prong 7, which projects rearwardly from the rear leg 10 of the clip. The neck portions 11 of these parts are preferably formed with side lugs or lips 8, which are bent inwardly in shaping up the button, giving the shank or neck of the Serial No. 707,476. (No model.)
button and the drawer-supporter rounded edges to prevent fraying and injury of the parts supported thereby. The prongs 5 are also bent inwardly, so that when the clip is slipped over the edge of the fabric and its legs 9 and 10 flattened upon the fabric by a suitable tool the prongs will engage the cloth and lock the clip and'button in place.
The advantages of my invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art, since a button is provided which may be stamped up from an integral sheet of metal in one piece and the parts then bent into their proper shape. This enables the button and clip to be very cheaply made.
Many variations may be made in the shape of the clip-body, the button, and the other parts without departure from my invention, since I clai n1- 1. A but-ton consisting of a sheet-metal clip, having a button and its shank cut and bent out from the central portion of one of its legs, leaving a hole in the clip-leg having the button; substantially as described.
2. A sheet-metal clip having a button and its shank cut and bent out from the central portion of one of the legs of said clip, the shank having bent lips forming rounded edges for said shank; substantially as described.
3. A sheet-metal clip having a button and its shank cut and bent out from the central portion of one of the legs of the clip, and a drawer-supporting prong cut and bent out from the other leg of the clip; substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
. HOMER P. GOFF. Witnesses:
