Be it known that I, Trrnononn B. HAFER- 'rnr, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Belt Buckles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. I

lily invention relates to improvements in belt buckles, and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements herein described and claimed.

An object of my invention is to provide a belt buckle having means for engaging with an article of apparel underlying the same, whereby the belt buckle is maintained in adjusted position.

A. further object of my invention is to provide a device of the type described that is effective for the purpose intended without interfering in any way with the functioning of the device in the usual manner as a belt buckle.

A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the type described that has the appearance of a belt buckle of an ordinary construction, and is thoroughly practical commercially.

Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification, and the novel features of the invention will be particularly ointed out in the appended claims.

My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, in which Fig. 1 is a view showing the application and use of the preferred form of the device,

having an eye portion 3 mounted on the at the forward end thereof in the ordinary manner. The body portion 1 is formed with an integral prong 4 that extends at right angles to the forward end of the body por tion 1 at 5 and is bent at 6 to extend rearwardly and substantially parallel with the body portion 1.

From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device, the operation thereof may be readily understood. The body portion 1 is connected at its rearward end with a belt 7 and the belt is then adjusted to an article of apparel, such as the trousers 8, being passed through loops 9 that are ordinarily provided as a part of the garment. The body portion 1 is then moved relative to the overlapping edge portions 10 and 11 of the garment 8 until the prong l is inserted between such edge portions, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. Consequently, on account of the inherent resiliency of the material of which the belt buckle is made, the edge portion 10 will be clamped between the Body portion 1 and the prong 4 so that up and down movement of the belt knuckle relative to the garment 8 is prevented. The prong t co-acts with the body portion 1 to provide a spring clamping hook and the belt buckle embodying my invention will be maintained in adjusted position and prevented from slipping off the upper edge of the garment 8 as frequently occurs when belt buckles of an ordinary construction are used. In addition, the device can be adjusted at the same time the endof the belt 7 is moved into engagement with the belt buckle and this in an ordinary manner and without the slightest inconvenience. The operation of the device occasions no discomfort to the wearer and presents the appearance of a belt buckle of an ordinary construction. Obviously, the prong 4 may be inserted inany aperture in a garment, such as a button hole or the like, in order to prevent accidental displacement of the belt buckle.

Referring now to Figures 4 and 5 of the drawings, I show a slightly modified form of the device in which a body portion 20 has the form best seen in Fig. 4C. The body portion 20 is provided with a member 21 adapted for engagement with the belt 7 at one end of the latter and with a fastening member 22 that is of ordinary construction and functions in the ordinary manner to engage With the free end of the belt 7. The body por tion 20 is formed with an integral prong 23 that extends laterally at 2d and is then bent at to extend rearivardly and substantially parallel with the body portion- 20. The prong 23 corresponds to the prong 4. and the operation of the modified form of the device is identical With the hereinbeifore outlined operation of the preferred form of the device. Consequently, like reference numerals have been applied to like parts of the two terms of the device throughout the several views and no further description otthe parts of the modified form of the device that are identical With parts of the preferred "form 01? the device deemed necessary.

lhe device is simple in construction and when operatively applied Will prevent the accidental displacement of a belt buckle embodying the invention from adjusted position, whereby a garment underlying the device is maintained in a desired position without discomfort to the wearer and Without the appearance thereof being detrimentally affected. I claim:

1. A belt buckle having side members, and a spring clamping member extending from the forward end of one of said side members, said clamping member extending at right angles to said side member, and then being bent parallel with said side member.

2, A belt buckle made from a sheet of metal, said buckle having side portions thereoi bent at right angles to the main body portion, one of said side membersvbeing alittle iderthan the opposite member, the wider member having a slot therein adapted to snugly receivea portion of a garment therein.
