BONNET.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 640,720, dated January 2, 1900.

Improvements in Bonnets, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to bonnets principally designed for the use of children; and its object is to provide an improved construction by which the rear portion can be partly detached from the front or body portion to facilitate laundering.

The invention consists in the novel construction of bonnet hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bonnet constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a view showing the end of the rear portion disconnected from the front, so that it can be laundered.

In the said drawings the reference-numeral 1 designates the front of the bonnet, consisting of a rectangular strip of textile material, preferably consisting of a number of layers stitched together for the purpose of imparting the requisite stifiness thereto. If desired, this front maybe ornamentedin any suitable manner and is also preferably provided at the front end with an ornamental frill 2.

The numeral 3 designates the rear portion of the bonnet, comprising an approximately circular piece of any suitable textile material cut away on a straight line at the lower end and provided with a number of tucks 4. At one side the said rear portion at the lower end is permanently sewed or otherwise secured to the rear lower end of the front, so that while being laundered there will be no liability of the parts becoming separated and lost. At the opposite side said rear portion is provided with a hook 5, which is adapted to be engaged with an eye 6, secured to the said front. At the upper part the edge of said rear portion is provided with a drawingstring 7, passing through said tucks, whereby they may be gathered, .so as to cause said edge to bind upon the rear of the front portion. When in use, the free end of the rear portion will be connected with the front or body portion by means of the hook and eye, the drawing-string 7 being drawn taut, so as to gather in the edge of said rear portion and cause the latter to bind upon the rear of the front or body portion. When it is desired to launder the bonnet, the hook and eye are disengaged from each other, disconnecting the rear from the front portion at that side, and the drawing-string loosened. The bonnetcan now be washed and ironed with ease and facility and the rear portion again connected with the front. It will thus be seen that the said rear portion is never entirely detached from the front, so that there is no liability of the parts becoming lost, but can be readily laundered by simply discon necting one end of the rear portion, as above set forth. Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is- As an improved article, a bonnet comprising the front portion consisting of the rectangular strip provided with an ornamental frill and with tying-strings, and the rear portion consisting of an approximately circular piece of textile material cut away on a straight line at the lower edge and the front edge formed with a number of tucks, and secured to the front portion at one side, the hook and eye at the opposite side for detachably connecting the said rear portion to the front, and the drawing-string passing through said tucks for binding the rear portion to the front portion, substantially as described.
