To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, OLE WIGTIL, a resident of Canby, in the county of Yellow Medicine and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat and Coat Hangers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to an improvement in hat and coat hangers, the object of the invention being to provide a simple and efficient device for the purpose stated which can be folded into compact form, so that it can be readily packed into a small grip or satchel.

- With this object in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation showing my improvements in position for use. Fig. 2 is a view showing the device in its folded position. Fig. 3 is a sectional View showing the connection between the arms 5 9.

A represents a back or support which may be made of sheet metal 'and provided at its upper end with a hole or slot 1 for the reception of a nail or hook. The back or support is made with a vertical recess or depression 2, at the lower end of which .an arm 3 is pivotally attached and adapted when the device is folded and not in use to enter said recess or depression. The arm 3 is provided adjacent to its pivoted end with a shoulder 4, adapted when the arm is swung down to engage the back or support A, and thus maintain the arm in a horizontal position for the reception and support of a hat and trousers.

Two arms 5 5, preferably of sheet metal, are pivotally connected at their inner ends to the lower portion of the back or support A by means of pins 6, and around each pivot pin the arms 5 are made with annular ribs 7 to bear against the back or support. When in use, the arms 5 project laterally from the base A and are maintained in this position by engagement with a stop 8, projecting from said back A.

pivot-pin with an annular rib 10 to bear against the arm 5. The arms 5 and 9 are made with ribs 11 by means of a suitable stamp or die, the opposite face of each arm being thus made with grooves 12. The arms 5 and 9 are so disposed relatively to each other that the ribs on one will enter the grooves in the other at the meeting ends of said arms, and thus the outer arms 9 are rigidly attached when in use to the arms 5. The ribs on the arms 5 9 also serve to brace them. The respective pairs of arms 5 9 are curved, as shown in Fig 1, whereby to adapt them for the re ception of a coat and vest.

When the device is not in use and it is desired to pack it in a satchel, the arms 9 will be folded over the arms 5 and then the latter will be turned up on their pivots, so as to lie parallel with the back or support A, as shown in Fig. 2, in which position they will be held by the engagement of the ends of the pivot-pins a (which connect the arms 5 9) with depressions I), made ,in the back A near the upper end thereof.

My improvements are simple in construction, can be folded into compact form, are cheap to manufacture, and are efiectual in all respects in the performance of their functions.

Various slight changes might be made in the details of construction of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof or limiting its scope, and hence I do not wish to limit myself to the precise details herein set forth.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I n p 1. The combination with aback or support and a stop thereon, of two arms pivotally attached thereto and adapted to engage said stop, arms pivotally attached to the outer ends of the first-mentioned arms, one arm of each pair having grooves and the other arm of each pair having ribs to enter said grooves, whereby to maintain the arms of each pair normally in a fixed relation to each other when the device is in use, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination with a back or support and a stop thereon, of two sheet-metal arms pivoted to said back or support and adapted to engage said stop, sheet-metal arms pivotally attached to the outer ends of the firstmentioned arms, each arm having ribs on one side and corresponding grooves in the other side, the ribs on one arm being adapted to enter the grooves in the other arm of each pair where the arms of each pair are pivoted together, substantially as set forth.

3. The combination with a back or support, of sheet-metal arms attached thereto and adapted to project laterally therefrom, each arm made in sections pivotally connected together, a rib disposed around the pivot-hole of one section and bearing on the other section,

, and one section having grooves and the other section having ribs to enter said grooves whereby to retain said sections of the arm distended, substantially as set forth.

4. The combination with a back or support and astop thereon, of arms pivoted to the support and adapted to engage said stop,arms pivoted to the outer ends of said first-mentioned arms, and pivot-pins for securing the arms of each pair together, the base or support having depressions to receive a head on one end of the pivot-pins which connect the arms of the re- OLE VIGTIL.
