M.- H: GAZ IER. I FOLDING CLOTHES HANGER. APPLICATION FILED 1120.29, 1906.
mmw. I. cum cm mumumnnx mm D- 0- Patented Aug. 31, 1909.
UNITE I MARION H. GAZIER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
FOLDING CLOTHES-HANGER.
Specification of; Letters Patent.
PatentedAug. 31, 1909.
Application filed December 29, 1906. Serial No. 350,023.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARION H. GA'zInR, a
citizen of the United States, residing at the the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Folding Clothes Hangers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to devices for suspending articles of apparel when not in use, and the object thereof is to provide a simple, cheap, durable and shapely device for storing coats, waists and similar articles, and which can readily be folded for. storage, shipment or when otherwise not in use so as to occupy the minimum amount of space.
The principles of my invention are illus-:
trated in the drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of one form of my inventlon when extended;
Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section thereof; Fig. 3 shows a similar section, thedevice being represented as folded.
Further describing my invention with ref erence to the drawings, the two arms of similar section compr1se broadened shoulder portions 1 and l and arched portions 2 throughout the corresponding portions of their length. arched portions where they are attached to each other they are so formed that one will fit snugly within the other when joined as shown in the illustrations. One of the members is perforated to permit the passage. of a rivet 3 and the other (the inner member 2, as shown in the drawings) is provided with longitudinal slot. This may be diagonally placed, and more specifically a portion 4 may be disposed horizontally of the extended de vice and substantially in alinement with the extended members, while an upturned portion 5 is at an angle to the horizontal portion of the slot. A hook or other suspending member may be attached to the device by means of a rivet 3, by which the arms are pivotally attached to each other. I
When the several parts of the device are in the positions shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the pivot 8 is in the horizontal portion 4: of the L shaped slot, the adjacent outer and inner metal having and 2- The two members are of similar section;
At the upper parts of the an upturned portion,
' faces of the arched portions 2 and '2 are in contact with each other, and the extreme point 6 of the arm 2 provides, together with the pivot, a leverage by which the two arms are held in rigid relation to each other. By drawing the arms a art horizontally the pivot 3 is drawn out o the longitudinal por tion 4 of the L shaped slot and thrown to the extreme end into the off-set portion 5. The parts of the arms heretofore in contact with each other are freed from such contact and a new pivotal relation of the parts is formed,
, whereby the too 6 of the arm 2 is freed and sufficient clearance is given to permit the arms to fold into the relation to each other shown in Fig. 3. On the other hand, when folded, by placing thearms in their horizontal position and pressing them firmly together the pivot is slid to the horizontal portion of the slot and the parts restored to their original and relatively rigid positions.
I claim:
1. A garment hanger comprising arms of their contiguous ends adapted to nest together, a slot in one arm, and a pivot in the other arm adapted to pass through the slot and allow relative longitudinal movement of the arms.
2. A garment hanger comprising arms of metal having their contiguous ends adapted to nest together, a slot in the one arm having and a pivot in the other arm adapted to pass through the slot and allow relative longitudinal movement of the arms.
3. .A garment hangercomprising arms of metal having their contiguous ends adapted to nest together, a slot in the one arm having its extremities placed at an angle to the similarly formed adjacent portions of the arm, and a pivot in the other arm adapted to'pass through the slot and allow relative longitudinal movement of the arms.
In w1tness whereof, I have hereunto set .my hand, this 11th day of December A. D.
1906, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
